I hate being a fussy bastard. I've been full of five minute wonders and after one thing and another, I ended up at my local Triumph Dealer today (was riding with some mates on my ER6).
One thing led to another and I accidently took out a T100 Bonnie and then a Scrambler for a test ride, like you do after you've had a bike for 1200 miles/6 weeks.
They weren't as fast as my ER, and a bit heavier, worse brakes...but there was something about them that had the Kawasaki beaten. Charisma, an aura of coolness, a bigger grin and a nicer soundtrack. And stepping off each, they're also the kind of machines that I felt proud to have ridden, a proper motorbike made from metal, that you polish, rather than ABS plastic.
I hope I hadn't made a rush decision on getting my ER, it's certainly along the right lines of why I part ex'd my CBR for it - but the Triumphs seemed even better, more along the lines of chilled out, laid back, just ride and enjoy the scenery kind of bike. My criteria for the ER was something as enjoyable as my 125, but with the capability of cruising along bypasses and taking a pillion. Both of which the two Triumphs give, and then a lot more in the feeling that I'd own a 'nice bike', rather than...the green plastic thing I have now.
So, erm....should I? I'll loose even more performance, but the experience of riding such a machine was so much richer.
What'll it be? Triumph T100 or Scrambler? I like the chrome of the Bonnie, the extra power from the engine and the extra dials. But the Scrambler was awesome - like a scaled up classic version of my beloved XR125. |

Why not sell the XR, buy the scrambler for pottering and keep the ER for commuting duties? ____________________ My Flickr |

I tend to mix and match between the 125 and the 650 for commuting on, depending on mood, weather, etc. The 125 is the only bike I tend to use if I just want to nip into town, ride to a party, leave around a mate's house or the odd pub lock in or so, or just jump on when I want fuss free biking. As it's so easy to just get on and ride, plus next to nothing to run, I can see myself just keeping it for those reasons.
I doubt I'd use a Triumph in such a way - more along the lines of the ER6 is used now - commuting, but cruising around and enjoying the sunshine at the weekend too.
That could change though. If I find myself using the Triumph more and more, and it starts to replace the uses of the 125, obviously there'd be no need to keep the XR (although the 125 would fare better in winter). |
