Hello again my friends! I dont know if you remember but i got good help on here for information when i was looking for a motor for my kart.

I bought a honda cr125r motor, i think its an 1989 motor, and all seemed to be well with it until recetly.

Well, the kart had a 125 TM motor on it before that was air cooled, i had to remove it as it was too loud for the circuit. When i fitted the honda motor, i used the TM pipe, and im not sure if that was a good idea now.

Even thought the other motor was 125 and read valve, will it make much difference to the size of the pipe? I just cut the clange off the honda one and welded the tm one on!

Does anyone have any idea what power a standard cr 125 has? THe other Tm motors seem to have 35 bhp, and i wonder if im miles away? I am concidering looking for a 250cc motor as size dosnt matter. It just has to be single cylinder.

thanks!

2 strokes are massively dependent on the size, length and shape of the exhaust!! 2-stroke exhausts are basically specifically designed to work in harmony (that word can be taken literally in this sense) with the specific engine they were designed for.

If you have slapped a random (i.e. incorrect for that engine) exhaust on there, then at best the motor will not run right, at worst you could blow it up!! Shocked

Your problem will be exacerbated as MX motors are massively tuned with huge porting, making the exacting size and shape of exhaust even more important.

In short, NO - you didn't want to do that did you!! Laughing

Can you not weld the proper exhaust back on?

Its the 'expansion chamber' bit that is the crucial bit, the end can bit is of less importance (but still significant).

well, i could do that but the pipe it came with was for a a crosser and id need to cut and weld it maybe 10 places to get it any where near right hence why i went for the other pipe.

If it is that critical, ill give it one more shot then before i decide on going for a 250, they seem to be hard to get hold of anyway!

I have had a look about on google and i cant find the motor power for a cr125, any ideas? top 20's or early 30's would be good.

thanks for your help mate!

Er, you can't just chop it about else you are changing the properties of the pipe, you would then render it as useless as the other pipe!! Wink

Just did some google-fu, here is a good overview article about 2-stroke pipe design and the importance/theory behind it ... if you have a quick squiz at it, you will start to understand why you can't just randomly chop and change stuff randomly ... you can do it - but you need to understand the impacts/what you are doing ...

Oh and as for HP of a 89 CR125 ... I'd guess at early to mid thirty's Thumbs Up

thanks mate ill have a read of that!

I could not find a power figure for the cr, so if it does have early 30's i can tune it a bit i would imagine, and get it up there or there abouts!

I have a keihin carb on it now, but i do have a delotro, but its bigger than my manifold but i also dont know weather to bother or not!

thanks!

If you want more power out of it, the best way to do it .... wait for it ... is to change the exhaust!! Laughing

You can buy aftermarket 'power' pipes, these are specifically designed to modify the power characteristics of the engine, but as a general rule, if you want more top end power, you will be sacrificing some elsewhere.

If I were you I'd leave the motor alone and just concentrate on bracketary so you can mount the original pipe on it ...

Everytime i start to read that link you sent me someone walk in here and start s talking so, Grr!

THe pipe it is a tuned one, i got the motor from ebay and it was on a kart but it was on the other side of the chassie, and there was loads more room for it.

its the angle at the front that is the problem, its far too wide, it needs to be much tighter on my kart...

Maybe ill be well up there then with that pipe as aposed to this one now!!!

Now sneeking off to try to read it again while no one is about Embarassed

Read it, feck, i need to get htat other pipe on then, the engine does go well, but if it is about 30bhp, then its defonatly down on power as i was at hooton park race circuit and my kart was miles behind the TM 125's.

Any idea what jets should be in my carb?

Nope, no idea what jets to put in. But presumably what is in there now was working when it was a 'bike'?? Oh and what have you done about the airbox? That too needs to be the original for the bike and all the lengths and stuff kept as they should be.

Check the colour of the plug - that is normally the best indicator if the jetting needs to be changed. Look on the net for 2-stroke mixture plug colour guides.

Basically you can modify this sort of stuff, but unless you understand what's going on, do the calculations required for a change you want to make - all you are likely to do is actually make it slower and potentially make it go pop. Wink

Well, i bought the motor from ebay, it was on a kart you see so i dont know about what it was like on a bike. I got the pipe and silencer, but i got no carb, or any pipe to link the silencer to the pipe. I bought the carb i have now from ebay, so it has no relation to this motor, other that it just fitted on and worked ok.

It had no air box either, i just have a k&n filter to go on it that he gave me.

About modifying things, i recon this is well out now, but the thing is i have no idea what to look for! Ill get the other pipe on it, and try to get it running as best as i can, then check the plug and go from there!

thanks!

Shocked

With all those differences from stock, I'd say you were well and truly fecked then!! Laughing

Get the exhaust sorted as first priority, then do some plug chops to sort the mixture ... its all you can do now (unless you start buying more CR bits).

There is no reason why the combo you have won't work, but its gonna take some fiddling/experimentation to get it running right ... MX engines are really highly strung and don't take favourably to things like incorrect jetting ... so lets just hope it doesn't pinch up on you in the meantime/experimentation phase Wink

Once you have it running properly, the first thing you want to do is put a new piston and ring in there (at a minimum new ring/rings).

MX motors have massive porting and lots of revs, as such they eat rings, and when they go, they can do expensive damage ... so its best to chuck new ones in regularly as preventative maintenance. As I presume you have no idea how many hours the motor has done since last rebuild, you need to get a new ring in there to get a known start point (and count hours from then on). Also if the ring is worn, you will lose crispness of the motor ... Wink

I've got a YZ125 MX bike and I can categorically state that MX motors are animals!! Thumbs Up
