Evening chums, I'm terribly drunk so excuse my ramblings.

Basically a few drinks back I bought myself an iPhone 3G (not an 's') on eBay so that I could use the GPS to get around when on holiday in China and Japan next month.

However in a moment of lucidity between cans I've been looking around t'internet and it seems to imply that you can't download maps in advance onto the iPhone and use GPS, and instead have to use a combination of wi-fi or 3G to get Google maps and use GPS on that.

Is that right? I'm not going to be guaranteed a Wifi hotspot wherever I go, and I don't want to pay for 3G connection .

Any thoughts?

for starters.. 3g is free. (although on re-reading you might incurr roaming charges for data)

secondly, since the 3.0 software update you can now have proper sat nav on the iphone. its in its infancy at the mo and there is only one sat nav app available at the mo (check app store - featured)

tomtom will be releasing theirs soon too.

but yes, before the software update you were limited to google maps and directions, not turn by turn nav, since the update.. just got a short wait before all the satnav people release their programs Smile

oh and anyone that says you cant have satnav on the 3g because it doesnt have a compass like the 's' is an idiot and should be told so immediately.

Hi, thanks for that.

Don't suppose you know if there's a sim I can buy in this country that will give me the free roaming 3G when I'm over there? The mobile I use had a cheap Tesco Value PAYG sim in it which doesn't even let you make calls when abroad, never mind anything else!

I would be happy to wait for Tomtom, but my flight leaves in 5 days, so don't think it'll be release in time! Laughing

(it's possible I didn't think this purchase through fully)

Yeah, that what I've been reading. Screw that then!

From what I can see, it is possible to download maps onto the iPhone then use GPS on the downloaded ones. Just haven't found any definitive instructions yet!

Excellent. Ta. Doesn't say it's compatible with GPS, but I'll dig around and see if you can get both to work together. Thanks for that.
