PostPosted: 15:16 - 29 Jun 2009    Post subject: Engine get's so hot!! Reply with quote

went out on my hornet today for a quick ride, realised that the needle on my heat guage was right at the top. never seen it that high before.
when i got onto the faster roads it went down because it was getting cold air in it.

any suggestions on what could be making it get so hot??

its got plenty of coolant in the radiator,
plenty of engine oil, (could old, mucky oil be causing this?)

and lastly, could a service sort it out for me? ive been meaning to get it serviced but havent got any money Sad

any help is much appreciated.

Is the fan working?

How are the fins on the radiator looking?

Did it actually go into the red?

If not I'd just put it down to riding slowly and the outside temperature being very hot.

Unlikely to be the thermostat as he said it went down once riding on faster roads.

Have you cleaned the bike with a jetwash? Many people flatten the radiator fins by jetwashing then the airflow through the rad is severely reduced.

nah not into the red, inbetween the red line and the last black line. (if that makes sense)

nope no pressure washing.

yeah it was very hot outside

yeah the fan comes on when it gets too hot.

can riding slowly increase heat? because i was riding through the city at the time, stopping and starting at the lights.
then i got onto the a140 doing 65mph and it went down to the middle line.

not sure how to check the stat and water pump to be honest...

Yes the engine does get hotter in slower moving traffic. If it starts to get too hot (and I mean really hot) the fan will cut in to cool it down.

In this case it does sound like it was just the weather and riding conditions making the engine runner hotter than usual. I wouldn't worry.

Yes of course, its all about airflow through the radiator. My Speed Four went up to 107 degrees today which is hot but not in the danger zone. To my relief the fan came on, I was concerned that it wasn't working as I don't remember ever hearing it before.

As long as you didn't go into the red it should be OK but you need to get the bike serviced. If you can't afford to service a bike, then you can't afford to run it. The bare minimum it will require an oil and filter change which any monkey can do.

Basically you've got three options:

Arrow Don't run such a high performance bike (stick with a CG)

Arrow Get the bike serviced

Arrow (the best option) learn to do maintenance yourself. Basic servicing is not hard and will extend the life of your engine.

Oh yeah there is a fourth option that I forgot to mention

Arrow Keep running the bike on the same oil etc, and have severe engine damage or at worse engine failure.

There is no excuse for not maintaining a bike IMO and as I said, if you can't afford to get a garage to do an oil change and can't do it yourself, sell the Hornet and buy a CG. You'll still need to learn to do the oil change though!!!

Are the fins on the radiator clogged? If so try carefully/gently cleaning them out using an airline, or soaking and rinsing with low pressure hose/water spray - from the back

It may not be working, my bike sounds like a jet aircraft after 90% of the time after I ride it especially in summer. The fan should kick in at 104.

If it's a carbed bike and one the balance is off between the carbs it can result in hot running too.

to answer davehogg.. nah the fins only have a little bit of crap in them, other than that fine. i took it out for a ride today and it wasnt too bad.

to answer StevRS.. i de-restricted my bike about 2 weeks ago, could that have an effect on the balance between the carbs??

If you derestricted it wrong, it could maybe be running a little lean.

I've just made a post in your other thread HERE, take a look...

Just the weather alone over tha last couple of days has been enough for any motor of that state of tune to get hot in traffic. thats what the fan is there for! I know the fan on a 2006 hornet dont kick in untill 102' C is met and it turns off at 95'C carb inlet restrictors should not cause it to run lean...the std honda kit has washers in the inlet rubbers about 1/5th the size of the inlets ( I jest you not) but that and carb top restricors wont bother it in that respect. Also the honda kit had a different CDI unit. most probs to allow max torque at lower revs!
HTH

P.S. at 30mph and above you should be fine...if not post up again Wink

yeah i had 4 inlet blades in the rubbers between the carbs and inlet manifold.
didnt have the carb-top restrictors (the cylinders that restrict the slide movement)

M0l0t0v said that his friends hornet had a CDI restriction but he said if they restricted the CDI unit they would have given me the original. how can i find out if the CDI is restricted?

im starting to think it may just be the hot weather.

First stop is just to change the coolant, if it's been in there since day one it won't be working as well as it should, make sure you use the right mix.

My Blade was running hot in this temp, it's a digital guage so not sure what the red starts at but would assume red is considered about 115-120 degrees, most fans kick in between 100-105. At 80 on the motorway mine was running at 80 degrees yesterday, that's hot, after being stopped for 5mins it'd get upto 100 before the fan kicks in and keeps it around there. Even in croatia a few days ago the bike was only running at 76-77 while riding so it is pretty damn hot here at the moment.
