Seeping rocker cover

Since ive had my bike its consistantly seeped oil from the rocker cover, when i rebuilt the top-end i used a new gasket but after a bit of a 'moment' with the rocker cover bolts, it meant the rocker cover had to be removed a couple of times and then valve clearance adjustments (which i did too tight the first time Doh!) so basically the gasket was subjected to some use, but is this enough for it to be rendered useless?

They are about £10 each after delivery so they are not cheap to keep replacing but ive now replaced the rocker cover bolt rubbers which were slightly split and its still leaking. So before i buy another gasket, should this be happening or do i have another issue?

weigh up the cost of replacing the oil and a new gasket and see which comes out cheaper in the long-run.

They are usually re-usable for years until they become hard. Unless you've managed to put a nick in it somewhere, of course Smile

You may just need to nip it up a bit more, don't know if that's actually possible the bolts are sometimes designed to bottom out first. The other thing to look at is that the manual will often specify just a splodge of silicone sealant, either just at the corners or on the half-moon bit that may be there where the cam journals were machined out.

Fair point Laughing But just wanted to know if it is actually the gasket at fault becuase its already been replaced once and it still leaks. Im just wondering if taking it off and putting it back on a few times would 'ruin' it? Worth a try though. Thumbs Up

Finpos - I did try to tighten it a bit more but managed to snap both bolts in the process Doh! as they stop so far due the design of the bolt. I could try some sealant actually but hopefully it wont have to come to that. Thumbs Up

Have you checked that the head and rocker cover mating faces are clean? Same goes for the gasket. Was it OEM or aftermarket?

It was an aftermarket gasket, NP gaskets. I did clean the surfaces but now i think i will just buy the gasket, clean them again and try again because im not sure what else it could be. Thumbs Up
