Tonights Accident!!!

Well, it was going to happen at some point!! Nearly killed, nearly a broken/crushed leg!! Poorly bike

I was on the way home tonight, (I ride 30 miles each way from home to work and vice- versa) I had been following an ambulance with it's blues & twos going. As we approached a roundabout, there were 2 cars in front of the ambulance. The first car (in the very front) sees the lights, hears the siren, and pulls over, the car following, fails to see the ambulance, pulls out to swerve around the stopped car, suddenly sees the ambulance and gets into the very left lane and stops. We are 30 yards from the roundabout at this point. The ambulance and me are in the right hand lane ready to take the 3rd exit. So the ambulance passes the two cars, I am doing about 15mph as I get towards the junction, when the woman in the car (that didn't see the ambulance) suddenly pulls out into my lane and smahes into the side of my bike, just missing my knee by inches. I was just able to manouver to avoid the direct impact.
Anyway, the side fairings of my bike are smashed on the left hand side, luckily I was able to keep the bike up, just or both sides would have had it.
The woman accepted all responsibility, telling me about 20 times that she never saw me...typical!!! The guy in the car she swerved around stopped and wanted to be a witness for me, and he proceeded to give her a right mouthfull lol. She even said that she had not even seen or heard the ambulance!!!!
So all details exchanged now, I have called my insurance company and sorted my end already. Now lets see how long this all takes.

Glad to hear your OK mate, sounds like it could of been a lot worse.

Good thing is she's admitted it and by the sounds of it you've got a good witness, here's hoping to a swift settlement.

You are right, but it wasn't as if I was up it's rear, i just happened to be following it as it approached the roundabout. This was an A road, so very wide, and open. I was only doing about 15mph, I was nearly stopped.
No matter, she should have looked before blindly moving out again.
But I am uninjured, but the bike looks ill.

I think I know where Marje is coming from. If you are following an ambulance then you can expect the cars that pull over sharpish, to then be likely to just hop back out.

the worst thing is the bike! id hate to have my bike smashed into just as the weather is getting hotter.

fair play to the woman for owning up, what a nice thing to do.

and as for following the ambulance... he said he wasnt up its arse so what could he do?
im sure in that position we would all have been waiting patiently behind it, not expecting an un-observant woman to plough into the side of the bike.

just one of those unfortunate accidents that you have to brush off.

Ironically enough, you'd have been safer if you were up the arse of the ambulance - you'd have been long gone by the time the bint had swerved back!

For reference, I wasn't up the arse of the ambulance,(I already said that) I was in the middle of the right hand lane, and the bint pulled from the far left and smacked me right in the middle, just forward of my knee..

Sorry I mentioned it now. I wasn't chasing the bloody thing, it was on my way home, on my road that I take every night, doing 15mph as you get ready to stop at a junction is hardly chasing.....is it ?

In the poor lads defence when i got hit in the side the only real damage was a bent R&G and a snapped off gear lever/footpeg but the damage to me was some badly torn tendons.

I'm with MarJay on this one. It sounds just like you were using the path that the ambulance was carving through the traffic to your own advantage. The people who pulled over out of the way were doing that to let the ambulance by, not to let you or a stream of ambulance chasers through to.

I'm not really surprised at the outcome to be honest, although it would have been nice if the woman had seen you and not run into you. But if you really wanted to get technical your manoeuvre could almost be classed as overtaking I reckon, its not as if the cars were parked up at the side of the road - they were part of the traffic at the time.

To be honest Steve.r I'm agreeing with the majority of posts on this thread, you're an idiot for following the ambulance like that. If I'd have been the car who drove into you I'd be making a claim against you for overtaking and attempting to follow an ambulance with its blue's and two's going...

It doesn't matter if you were right up its arse or a 100 yards behind it, an ambulance in that state (i.e siren and lights going) isn't a normal part of traffic. Everyone should pull over and then pull back out after it in the same order, therefore you should have waited for the cars to pull back out again instead of risking it.

It's not just you either, when I'm in the car I get fed up with the number of drivers who don't notice an ambulance or police car coming up behind them, and when they finally do they seem to think it's okay to overtake all the other traffic that's pulled over in front of them to let the emergency vehicle pass - just plain bloody selfish and small minded.

Now if you wanna do it properly, you've got to keep well in FRONT of the emergency vehicle for as long as you can, not behind it!!

If I ever let an ambulance by then I expect every muppet on the road to pull back out without looking. Sometimes you get the idiots in their cages who decide to dive out right behind the ambulance so that they can follow it and make some progress.

Glad the OP is OK but it does sound like a fairly predictable one.
