Haynes has confused me (not supposed to do that :P)

I was thinking when i topped up my oil yesterday I might have overfilled a bit; had a little poke myself and it looked overfilled when i was holding it as upright as i could (engine hot, but off).

Been reading the proper way to check oil level and as you would expect peole say holding it verticle on flat ground but my haynes clearly says 'Position the motorcycle on its center stand (where fitted) or on an auxillary stand.'

If for some reason it is designed to be read on a stand, can you say that an 'auxillary stand' would be the same height as the normal center stand?

WTB clarification because reading the workshop has got me all worried about overfilling (also how much overfilling is 'ok'? I didnt put in TONNES)
Its a bandit 600 btw (1999)

The idea is to read the oil with the engine horizontal, as its going to be like this when you're riding it.

On the centrestand is fine, if your bike just has a sidestand you need to lean the bike upright or stick it on a paddock stand.

If checked on the centre stand, then this lifts the back end up and therefore the engine is tilted forward making the oil appear slightly low (same for a paddock stand)!!

Don't always believe what Haynes tell you!!

I regularly run my Bandits slightly overfilled with engine oil anyway so as long as it's not coming out of the filler cap you should be okay. Razz Those engines are pretty agricultural - you can get away with murder.

what on earth has 'height' got to do with anything?

it could be on the floor or on the roof of a 70 storey hi-rise it'll still read the same Wink

trick is just to make sure the bike is level, or more correctly, the ground it is on is level/flat.

Because the center stand lifts the back wheel in the air making it not level, this height at which it lifts it determines how much the engine is tilted.

Thanks for the advice guys will just try and hold it level like have been doing (crazy haynes) going to change all the oil soon anyhow.

So long as the ground you are on is level, then placing it on its center stand will be fine.
If you are not sure, most bikes have the amount to put in stamped just above filler hole. Put nearly that amount in. Look at level, then turn bike round so its facing the opersite way and check again. If ground is level it will read the same, if not one will be high and the other low.... Just balance it out then Thumbs Up

If the ground is level, and i put it on the center stand the BACK wheel is raised and the front is not...
This means it is tilted, I thought that was obvious?

Well, that is the question I was originally asking but are you sure about this or just guessing? I guess you cant be sure.
But this brings me to why haynes also suggests a paddock stand because there is no way of knowing if the 'stock' center stand is going to give the same tilt as a paddock stand, which made me tend to believe the majority of posts on the subject in the past which just says hold it level.

About 40 secs in the oil bit starts. The Honda tech says if it's on a stand it should be filled to just below the max line to compensate for the height/angle of the bike.
