The OP was a little insensitive with the " on a brighter note" bit.

Perhaps he's reading our opinions of his post and including them in his survey.

The OP does not know very much about how a railway works...You can not stop a speeding train bt throwing a fat bloke at it.

Dear Everyone,

I would like to thank all the people who took part in the survey. For better or for worse, all of you obviously have a lot to say about it! I can understand that some people regard the message as SPAM but I needed to post it to the general population and there are limited places to post psychology experiments/ studies on the internet. Unfortunately I am a Masters student who has severely limited research funds so I’m not able to pay participants for taking part in the survey. Now that enough data has been collected I shall now try to remove the study from this forum (if this is possible!).

My supervisor, who helped me to construct the survey, did tragically die a few weeks ago (thanks to 1930 Ariel for posting his obituary) and given that he had written in one of his papers that he had used this site to post a similar study, I thought he might be a regular user of Bike Chat Forum (and therefore some of you may have chatted to him on the website). I have also taken note that the last paragraph of my message (which I am genuinely interested in knowing) should have been written as a separate wall post. I also accept that it would have been more appropriate to put the notice about Nicola in a separate post. Please note however that Nicola and I were going to post the study on a few forums (such as Bike Chat Forum) anyway.

Just briefly, some of the scenarios used in the survey are actually famous examples used by some of the current top academics in cognitive science and moral psychology. They are not supposed to be especially realistic but they are designed to generate specific reactions (especially disgust). If you have any specific questions then please feel free to contact me([email protected]). I shall now try to remove myself from the forum altogether as I see that I have bad karma!

Thanks again for your participation
Kind regards,

Ed Sucksmith

I think if you had of left out the "my teacher is dead" bit now "do my survey " it may have gone better. I did your survey anyway and think a lot did to. Least you came back. Spamming is not liked in here.

Okay, elston, so you've cleared that up a bit.

We're like that about perceived spammers and/or apparently heartless people who'd add their own interest on the back of someone dying tragically. Which is how your post seemed at first.

However, now that that's all cleared up ... I'm sorry to hear about your man Nicola dying; it was a bit unfortunate the way you posted it, and accordingly drew huge amounts of typical BCF facetiousness.

I wish you the best in your studies.

It's a general morality question. In general, people will always save life, but not by deliberately killing someone else to do it.

I was happy doing it, until I got to the last page and clocked the 'how often do you go to church' bit. Which didn't have room for Atheist on it.

Either way, my somewhat liberal views on theft, incest and sex will no doubt be correlated with my lack of religion.

NOT a fair variable Evil or Very Mad

Thats weird. I did this survey just a few hours ago and laughed at the questions, especially the incest one.

Then I listened to this radio programme which refers to loads of those same questions and explains the reasoning behind why they are relevant.
Its quite interesting if you're interested in this philosophical sort of stuff.

I know that.
However as an ex railway man (Zimbabwe 1980-1984) I know a few things about chuff-chuffs. My answers on the railway section are strongly influenced by the knowledge that I picked up with the NRZ. Chucking a fat bloke at a train will only cause a mess and be a waste of a very usable porker.

I quite agree with the church thing though, it fails to cater to those of us of no faith or other faith. I would not expect to see a box on any official form asking for "Christian Name", this survey gives me the impression it was C&P from 1976.

It's a nice idea though- think how many lives could have been saved in rail crashes throughout time by simply having a fat bloke available at all times!

I actually think it's good that people feel happy enough to join in with us on this forum, and ask our opinions about things they are studying...it just goes to show how popular we are, and how interesting we must seem to the 'real world'.

OP, do not leave us just because you got a duff karma bashing. It could change, many people have been bashed and have survived and ended up staying here for years... Cool
