PostPosted: 21:44 - 30 Jun 2009    Post subject: 2001 R6 rev counter / gear indicator all over the place Reply with quote

google didn't help me so here we go..

The bike is running fine but while riding the rev counter needle goes nuts jumping from 1k to 10k and my datatool gear indicator is also giving me random gear numbers Laughing
it doesn't do this while stationary at lights etc..

if the gear indicator / rev needle are momentarily working they go back to going crazy as soon as i roll off the throttle

this started happening about 2 months ago then just cured it's self and has since been fine but started doing it again.

only electrical modification done to the bike ( apart from the gear indicator ) is a set of rear integrated indicators built into the lights so i don't think thats related?

i'm not sure what to check, the visible wires at the front seem in good condition and are secure so i'm not sure what it could be so any help appriciated thanks.

Your gear indicator is messing up your clocks, it will have a broken wire or loose connection, it runs off engine revs aswell posistion sensor if i remember correctly.

On later reflection, if its not the gear indicator then there may or may not be a short in your clock loom, basically what you need to do is be very patient and have a really good look at your bike.

With electrics its quite hard to source the problems as they're is so many wires and such, i hope its just a short with your gear indicator and if it is it should be really simple to patch back up and will be fine.

Check if a code comes up where the temp usually is when it does this as it may be a fault code.
As an example the rev counter on the R1 (R6 as well) flicks to a certain revs for a few seconds then a different revs then returns to normal. Then the cycle repeats every few minutes.

i can get hold of fault codes easily, if you can get your clock to bring up the fault code i'll be glad to find out which it is for you should you not be able to find out yourself.

No fault code appears, the wires i can see that are exposed all seem ok.

the rev needle moves randomly so it's just a matter of finding out what wire / connection is causing it but i don't know where to start Crying or Very sad

Does your model of r6 have an exup valve? If so check it isnt seized or that the cables for the servo aren't stuck. Either that or like the t/cat its the fuel sender. if its not an fi model it prob wont have any fault codes.

Edit: Worth checking if it does have an exup that the servo goes into service when starting up

If the exup valve is OK. Then its a case of starting at one end and looking at/testing every connection along the loom. But as you have done some wiring mods. I would start there and look and see if your earths are OK and that you have not broken any wires when fitting.
That goes for both ends of the bike.

Really last time I checked one of the many Yamaha's the rev counter shot up to about what the op stated. But it could be any multitude of things id say check the easy one which requires 5 10 minutes at most to check without tearing the bike apart checking wiring.

When I switched the ignition on yesterday the rev-counter kept blipping up to 7k and then down again. The handbook says that this is an EXUP sensor fault.

Does the 2001 R6 have an exup valve, i've just scanned a microfiche and it doesnt show one?
Is your bike carbed or injected? If memory serves for a fault code or fault indicator to be showing the bike would normally be injected, as it has several sensors to accuratly feed the bike petrol and air mixtures reguarding input from the sensors.

Surely the rev counter going crazy is what is causing the gear indicator to go nuts, as that work out what gear your in from the revs and speed.

Would imagine so, but apparantly its the exup valve? I thought the first model R6's didnt adopt the exup valve system until later down the model line?

I'll ask to see the wiring diagram for the gear indi and see if its linked to the clocks like i originally thought.

I'm quite sure it doesn't have an exup valve, i've read it a few times somewhere.

going to have a serious look at it today, if i fix it i'll post up the cause.

also checked out https://yzfr6.net/images/microfiche/

it doesnt have an EXUP valve, and its carbs, not fuel injection.

my clocks did the same thing when i bought the bike, speedo was fine, tacho was mental and eventually got stuck at the wrong end of the clocks.

turns out the plug in the back had popped out and was working intermittently.

pushed the needle back round, plugged it in and it was fine again.

i've got the gear indicator too. check the push in connectors on that as well.

Is the battery charged? My S4's clocks would go nuts if the battery was low.
