I'm not saying it's right or wrong. It is what it is. I'm sure most of us can recount a time when we were bullied at a young age, and how we felt about it, and I'm sure than if we're completely honest, a large percentage of us here have gone too far with taking the piss out of someone, and have indeed been bullies themselves.

I feel sad when I think about the kid I picked on a couple of times at school. There are many reasons I did this, I think at the time I thought that's what you did, there was a pecking order and you all got picked on by the big guy, and there was a weasel that always got picked on by everybody.

But recently, as a grownup, I've come to see it in a slightly different light. And I wish that I'd been able to see it like this when I was younger (and being bullied). It seems like on teh internetz, it's all magnified - this anonymous forum (not BCF, the net in general) provides a shield to hide behind. And when this shield is in place, the piss taking starts and mob rule kicks in. I'm sure that in each and every case of online bullying, if you put the two people together in the room, the bully would go quiet and nothing would happen. It's the anonymity and the mates that back you up that push it further and further, then it goes too far, and everyone's a bully.

Of course, the people who seem to be bullied a lot seem to be the types who are victims in life. They might have a disability, or gingerism (I know I'm doing it now, but I kid, I kid), or be fat, or something that makes them stick out from the crowd around them. If you're not able to answer back fast enough, you start to take the punches. and it all snowballs from there.

I'm interested in the usual suspects' opinions on this?

I am fortunate in that I have never been bullied and obviously I can't appreciate how self-deprivating it must feel to be subjected to such mockery, however; I like yourself feel a constant regret that niggles in my mind. When I was five I used to beat up this kid for fun. Most lunchtimes and for what reason? I have absolutely no idea. But I was a child and these things happen, but I do wonder if my actions 16 years ago still burn a physical scar within his memory and whether I have had a permanent effect on the way he lives his life. I still see him about from time to time and still I haven't the guts to ask if he remembers it and offer my apologies. It makes it more tragic in that he is a little retarded and his social skills aren't all that, I do wonder if those three months of infantile bullying may have been the cause of this.

Maybe it is just me that remembers the fights and as a result of the bullying, I am the one who has suffered the most? If you can look at it like that.

As a consequence, ever since I was able to truly differentiate between right and wrong I feel a real pain in my heart whenever I hear of someone being bullied and quite often at secondary school I stuck up for the guy who got picked on. Maybe some kind of redemption. I certainly could never really bully anybody since that point.

I also think you are right about the internet, IMO this is far more worrying than conventional bullying as although punches may hurt, psychological bullying can be as soul destroying. Which is why I have some of the views I do on domestic violence, yes men punch women from time to time and for that I condemn them, but as many women i'm sure psychologically admit blows to their respective partners and IMO they too should be condemned, but that's another thread.

This is the bit that I personally find interesting because what I really don't understand is why anyone would wish to be a 'victim' and more significantly do so repeatedly, despite well meaning advice and sometimes even physical intervention. I don't understand why 'they' don't understand and what they get out of such treatment Confused There is poor self-esteem but to the extent where they encourage poor treatment and seem to almost revel in it? Attention seeking perhaps, meh?

I only once was involved in anything resembling bullying during my school years and it resulted in me punching a very mild mannered girl square on the chops Shocked When Friends Reuinted started up I searched for her and apologised - she hardly remembered apparently, but it still didn't make me feel any better about it - the guilt has never gone and never will Crying or Very sad

I think as children you're normally involved in one end of the bully scale if not both. (The bully and the bullied). I don't think kids realised how damaging the torments were until the recent anti bullying work by celebs etc.

I think I've told this story before but...

In a pub ordering a pint, when this lad says 'ello Phil'. I look up at the stranger whos about a foot taller and two foot wider than me, smile and drink my pint.
Him: Don't remember me, do you?
Me: No mate, sorry.
Him: You used to call me poo flake...

I used to see it as a black and white issue. Bully bad, victim good.

However, a more accurate way to look at it is power games.

Power games are part of life. Pecking orders are part of life. To my mind, the key is showing a little restraint. So to my mind, to win the power game is enough. However for some people, its not enough to win, they get pleasure and confidence from grinding the other person down.

I happen to think that's wrong, but maybe it can be a good thing for the strong to reinforce their self confidence with the complete humiliation of those inferior to them.

Whats appropriate, depends on the setting and the situation.

I would agree, that on BCF there is a bit too much unpleasantness, but sometimes it can be a bit tricky to decide who started it.

Someone can unintentionally or otherwise transgress some rule that someone else holds sacred. They step in and order compliance, and feel justified in using all means necessary to make someone step in line.

Its not nice, but it provides order and control, which may be beneficial in a way, as most people will just follow the will of those of higher status, or more able to be unpleasant.

There are lots of power games, one upmanship etc

If you are good at one type of game, you will see that one as valid, and one you arent good at as invalid and unfair.

In an ideal world, at the slightest unpleasantness, there would be mass disapproval, and the one stepping out of line would learn to be nice or leave, but maybe that in itself is unpleasantness. What tends to happen, is someone can be quite entertaining in their unpleasantness, and people like their strength and dominance.

So if the 'victim' cant expect help from an outside all powerful entity like a teacher, they either try to conform to the 'bully's requirements, or they learn to put the bully in his place.

The other thing is, the 'bully' often doesn't see himself as a bully, and is just playing rough, and may want someone he can respect to stand up to him and play rough too.

It can be a form of play, testing people out.

Or it can be because they dislike someone, and intend to drive them away or beat them into submission so they cease trying to assert themselves at all.

Power games, is a better way to see it, as often the 'bully' is acting to redress some perceived imbalance, or maybe reacting to some hurt they received from the 'victim' which gets overlooked.

However, often, the 'bully' enjoys the kick from power games and have a feeling of contempt for the weak.

It's a complex subject. Power games, dominant behaviour, etc

Kids raised in a controlled environment where everyone is nice, may be unfairly insulated from the world and may not be toughened up enough to deal with the outside world, where many situations are not controlled, so dominant people naturally rise to positions of power.

Arguably skill at dominant behaviour is more important than intelligence to get on in life. Often the highest paid people, are more dominant than intelligent, but they confuse their dominance for intelligence.

Typical patterns for dominant behaviour include focussing on the weakness in others, and the strengths in yourself. Never admitting to weakness, and exaggerating strengths. Pushing boundaries to see where the limits to acceptable behaviour are. Arguably, we need dominant behaviour in society. Without bosses or leaders exploiting the workers, would the workers still have jobs ?

In some cases yes, in other cases no.

After I stopped laughing, I apologised (bearing in mind this was a primary school thing), I waited for a beating, after all, 20 odd years later he still remembered. Laughing But I think he appreciated the apology. He said something about kids will be kids, chatted for a bit then fcuked off. Smile

Meh, I was bullied rather ferociously throughout my formative years (Big, intelligent, honest and hyper. Great combination).

And it's why now, I'm the confident and unflappable git I am now. Serious trial by fire.

If the weak can't take it, fuck em.

Re: recent events, this is the one place you can air out problems/theories without the usual social contract. That is the charm of this place. The fact that sometimes people are diametrically opposed to said views, well then you don the flame suit. If you can't take it, which he seemed to be perfectly capable, then don't incur the wrath.

The internet is a scary place etc etc.

Cause and effect. If someone is attacked then they learn to be the victim, which encourages those who bully. Endless circle, and likely starting at a very young age. Getting someone out of the situation when they have already been mentally destroyed will take far more than the odd bit of well meaning advice or intervention (both of which alone could easily be counter productive, after all they now feel that they can't even think for themselves or stick up for themselves).

If bullying has led to someone being confident then it suggests that they were not particularly bullied and were strong enough to defend themselves.

All the best

Well there are some frank opinions there. Thanks people. And I am kinda glad I got a little of it off my chest and didn't get the piss taken for it.

Now, the point I'm going to make may polarise opinions, but quite frankly, meh.

If the people who have been pretty obnoxious recently here (you know which thread I mean) were to find themselves actually speaking to the person they'd been bullying on here, would they carry it on in person? I mean, all this appears to be a group of people taking the rise out of someone who's (for whatever reason) obviously not able to defend against a crowd.

See, I'd like to think the bullies wouldn't do it in person. But I'm not so sure. I reckon they would. And I can totally see some of you involved in 'happy slapping' and the like. Going just too far.

depends on the person, some people can use something like being bullied at school as a springboard to make themselves better.. either by masking or altering the thing that made them a target, for others it can be an insurmountable block in their development.

I was bullied up to the age of 15, I was the tall fat kid (5'11" & 15stone by the age of 15), didn't talk much, didn't like football, liked to read.. I was a fairly happy child but by the time I got to secondary school i was a wreck.

To answer the question about wether the victims you see later in life are still affected by it, I'm 32 years old now and I still have no confidence, I don't like talking to people that I don't know and trust, and i'm still a tall fat guy that doesn't talk much, doesn't like football and likes to read.

I also still have my list, I made it when I was 14. It has about ten names on it of people that are one dark night away from being Patio foundations.. If one of them saw me in the street and said "hey, remember 18 years ago when we used to spend our lunch breaks beating you up and calling you names, well i'm sorry about all that, hope it hasn't affected your life buddy!" i'd probably say something along the lines of "'course not, it was just schoolyard pranks, no worries"..

.. i'd also try to find out their current address Smile

In person we'd of made our excuses and left the moment he started hopping about like a terrier on speed. If he hadn't got the hint, we'd of been just as blunt.

If someone wanders up to strangers in a pub brandishing a photo album of that, ...quality, they'd get the piss ripped out of them yes.

Bad parenting, simple as.

You bring your kid up to rely on you for protection, rather than standing their own ground and having the confidence to deal with things themselves then you are building a victim.

I don't deny some kids have a weaker personality, but this can be enhanced by molly-coddling parents. Teach a child to response to adversity by crying and running for the comfort of its parents and you will have a perfect 'target' for bullies - a big reaction and no comeback. Teach a child to deal with adversity by themselves, directly and they stand a much better chance of not being picked on.

As for the carrying out of bullying, I was discussing this with my best mate, who has been a close friend since the age of 11. Yeah, we gave people shit, and recieved some shit. It's good training for life.

What we did not do, as I pointed out to him, was single out a person just because they were weak, to pick on. They just had to be a cock. Picking on cockish behaviour is not bullying IMO, simply an education in social etiquette.

Tormenting the weak, for one's own pleasure is cruel and sinister, I believe those who do such things lack the ability to empathise, are unhappy with some aspect of themselves, and seek approval from a group of peers, which is easily obtained by joining in.

Guy at my school (an odd looking Ginger kid as it goes), killed himself at the age of 16. Partly because of exam pressure (stupid I know), and partly because he was bullied. He was not a cock tho, and consequently I had no quarrel with him, and was on friendly terms. He did display all of the traits I mentioned above - he was an only child and over emotional - big reactions were easily obtained by his tormentors. When at school his support from his parents was not available and boy did he suffer.

I didn't know what thread you was on about, but I guess it was the 10-pager of the scooter rider.

I was actually appalled at some of the behaviour of a couple of individuals. It is over-ridingly obviously he has social interaction issues and yet people seem to think he is "fair-game". Fair game my arse, IMO, they were picking on someone who couldn't give what they had recieved.

Attacking somebody who is mentally unable to defend themselves is pretty damn low IMO. You can't even claim that he really brought it upon himself, especially not intentionally.

Of course, looking at that thread, my view appears to be in the minority, so I end my piece here with the expected disagreement from most members.

See, I have to disagree on this point.

I agree that the X9 guy is a bit, well, 'special', but he was actively going around saying how amazing he was, how many miles he did, how cool is scoot was, and the fact that he had a "GF", all of which in my book constitued cockish behaviour, therefore jibing was acceptable.

Then to go and instruct people to lookup his GF on FB was also cockish behavior, the results of which are fair game.

Look, the guy is a bit soft in the head, I will grant you, but the facts remain that regardless of the amount of shit he gets online, he keeps coming back for more, and does stand his ground. He therefore, on balance must get a net balance of pleasure from being on-line, otherwise he would just stop. He is not a victim, because overall he enjoys it. I'd wager that he is a happy person - content with his own odd existence. True victims of bullying are not happy people, and it is their very unhappiness which motivates and defines the bully.

I'm afraid thats absolute total nonsense Damofo. I usually agree with a lot of what you say but in this case it is rubbish.

I was picked on at school pretty much constantly from the time I started secondary school until the end of my GCSE's and then quite a lot of the time at University. My parents told me to not rise to it, and if the circumstances were right to hit someone if they were causing me a problem. That clearly didn't work so I ended up just trying to shrug it off. That doesn't work either, but it means you don't get it as bad the next day and so it made life bearable. I was by no means the worst victim of this, but some of the victims seemed to be in and out of favour, whereas I was a constant for a lot of the time I was at school. I consider myself a strong person because of this, but I wouldn't say that I was weak in the first place, and I wouldn't say I did anything to be a 'victim' apart from being myself.

Don't tell me it was because I acted like a victim and because my parents mollycoddled me because that is complete rubbish. Its because there are a lot of cocks out there in the human race, and it seems to be a very British thing to continually rip the piss out of your 'mates' as a form of social bonding. This 'Banter' as a lot of people seem to refer to it very often goes beyond the usual level and very quickly becomes out of control.

I think that when this kind of piss taking is socially acceptable, it can easily escalate to something beyond what the victim might consider comfortable, and this is where it becomes bullying.

Some of the nicest and funniest people I've met have been those who know exactly how to tread this line without causing offense, and yet it seems there is a significant minority of people who do not even recognise this ability or the line, and then immediately try to do 'one better' and step beyond it.

You can argue that it is a 'fact of life' as much as you like, it still makes me feel sick to my stomach to hear and see abuse that has gone too far, and so trying to say it makes you stronger is not a valid argument. I tend to not get involved in the usual 'banter' unless I can be one hundred percent certain that I'm not causing offense, or if someone aims something at me that is beyond the usual ribbing.

And to say it is the fault of the parents of the bullying victim is ridiculous, as it is clearly the parents of the bully themselves who have failed to teach their children what is and is not acceptable in life. That is not to say that there aren't parents who are too soft on their children, but to assume that all bullying comes from the victim acting like a victim is silly.

There are no easy answers to this, of course an element of the hurt caused is down to what kind of person the victim is, but ultimately the bullying is down to the bully and you cannot forget that.

I personally believe however that a web forum is not the same as real life, and to some extent you have to accept that things could go further than they would in person. That said having read the thread in question I'd say that some people crossed the line, even for the web.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.
