finding out a reg plate

Bought bike, tax disk from 06 there, bar code in tact and serial round edge legible, unfortunately reg bit has been obliterated by the rust from the disk holder
Tried cleaning the disk, but not good enough to read and worried I will destroy disk by further attempts
No reg plate attached to bike- and no V5 from last owner

Trying to get V5 in my name before starting to get bike roadworthy

Spoke to Reece at DVLA who said don't panic, fill in a V62 with all known details, along with old tax disk and £25 and they would be able to sort me out from the VIN and old tax disk

All came bouncing back to me today,including the cheque with a note that just asked me to contact my local center, which I did
(damn their menu system that tells me about the many ways of paying them)

Got informed my V62 would have been returned without even being looked at because the reg plate bit wasn't filled in...damn your duff info Reece!

Got told to fill in a V888 and they would take it from there
Downloaded the V888, form didn't look like it would do the trick as it basically only wants to know who I am and the reg number of the vehicle in question - catch 22

Rang for confirmation, and got told neither V62 or V888 is what I
want , but a V55/5, current MOT and tax and a new plate would be issued
I did inform the bloke that the bike must have had a reg plate and I would much rather use that one than a new one and the fact that theres no way I can MOT it as its in bits - awaiting the reg docs before I start on it- because I don't really want to get bike up to MOT standard only to be told it can never go back on the roads
He kind of twigged my catch 22 situation at this point, but couldn't really help - other than suggest taking a trip to my local office - which he would not give a phone number for or ring them himself to see whether it would be a wasted journey prior to me setting off

Anyone here "been through their system" and got out alive with sanity still in tact?
Any hints or tips on what is REALLY needed as they blatantly dont know what I need to do?

I am a bit too "square" to just ride the bugger with a cloned plate - although I did suggest that if they couldn't help me that this situation may happen

Their adverts suggest the database is watching and all knowing
It transipres that getting any info without a reg number is far too complex for Swansea to do, no reg number available and they may as well be staring into a blank screen

Even my phone's database is capable of searching phone numbers and can come up with the name of the person

What bike is it, if worst comes to worst, id just buy another frame, and if you could be bothered swap your stuff onto new frame, or just keep the frame and use the plate off the new frame, although the 2nd option might get you in some bollocks if you crash.

OK well the bike is /only/ a cg125, so not as if its something rare or exotic worthy of restoration
I just fancy making a fun, cheap "cafe-racer styled commuter" as a summer project

I budgeted the £25 for applying for the V5 in with the price and the pile of crap I bought didn't cost a vast ammount
I assumed that because it had been on the roads at some stage and had been taxed it would be trivial for DVLA to let me know what the reg number was, hand me back the V5 in my name and nod to let me know whether it was allowed back on the road after MOT and tax so I can get on with it

Bike is stripped and am now at the stage where I want to start either getting the frame powder coated or painted, and get bolting it back together but didn't want to go ahead blowing any money till I knew it was going to be straight and allowed back on the road and the docs were in my grubby mitts

Have emailed DVLA to see whether there's anyone there who knows what the process is without taking wild stabs in the dark and passing the buck
I'm not holding my breath and will keep on looking

at least I won't need a working engine on the next one and will have some spares from it

you could probably get a frame with V5 for the price of the V5 application.

failing that, get a bent one with V5 for fuckall, grind off numbers and transfer the numbers.

Just found "another" number to ring, DVLA but wrong department, and I kicked up a complete fuss and refused to go away
They cut me off I rang back and made it patently clear that I was not going to just go away and it would be quicker and easier to deal with me rather than be rude

Basically got to speak to a lady (Catheryn in wheel clamping!) who was I think on the virge of slamming the phone down, but then (to get me off the phoneline) she made a promise that she would get the local office to call me (they really are uber secretive about local office numbers! - wont even put you through)
I did say I wouldn't hold my breath - assuming she would just file me under loony and get on with eating maltesers and flicking elazzy bands at each other or whatever these call center peeps do
as it was wheel clamping dept.. maybe back to self harming?

unbelievably she rang back 2 mins later to say that she had spoken to my local office and someone would call, couldn't say when
I told her I wanted to marry her and live the rest of my days knowing I had found a good woman....she did put the phone down on me pretty briskly

2 mins later (hadn't even finished rolling the celebration fag) and the local office were on the phone

I explained the issue, they took the vin number and no banana for a reg, gave em the serial number and expiry date of the tax disk...bingo!
took less than 3 mins from start to finish - shame its taken me over 3 hours to get to that point though and jumping through countless pointless hoops

wouldn't tell me the reg over the phone, but asked me to post all the papertrail, tax disk, v62 and £25 to her and she would send the V5 in return

Just hope it all comes back clean etc and I can get on with the project

Not sure what the moral of the tale is, but being a complete nightmare 'customer' is not in my nature and I was out of my comfort zone, but it seemed to hit the right button, and the local office were proper on the ball and helpful

Welcome to dealing with a Government department, aren't they great. You'll never get a local office number, if the dealership I work for ever needs to speak to them we have to fax them a request to ring us!
