Couple of films, couple of reviews

Haven't got time for decent reviews, only brief ones...

So i heard on the grape vine Slumdog Millionare was going to go straight to DVD. Then it wins loads of guff at the BAFTA's...It intriued me more than anything, so i went to watch it. I watch everything really, i love films but im very critical about what i like. I like to think i have an open mind though and im not stuck on a genre.
Slumdog millionaire is a heart warmer, but i could not escape the fact that for some reason all this cultural difference was put across as if it was education for us westerners. I tried not to look into it that deeply, but i kept thinking this was one of those films which came at the right time and right place.
Nothing much more to say really, i chuckled at some of it but i think i missed any real feeling because if you catch some world cinema it makes this 'cutural' film look as Indian as Maccy D's


I saw Gran Torino last night.
Interesting film, definatly not what i expected. Kinda made being a biggot kool again.lol. The mix of cultures was done fairly well i guess.
Seriously though, what was Clint thinking? Ok give everyone a shot at hollywood, but how do find a mongolian decendant child actor, good enough to stand next to Eastwood and act? Answer, you don't...you cast another race because after hearing the first few lines from the kid i could hardly watch when he came on again.
Good story line, and the pace of the film was perfect, would have been a near perfect American film if the rest of the cast could cut it with Clint. Nice send off all the same.

Thoughts on these two?

Not seen slumdog millionaire.

Gran Torino, was not what I expected, brilliant film though. I think you are exactly right when you say the other actors couldn't cut it. I was cringing at the bit with the girl and the 3 black guys near the beginning.

Sex Drive, unrated edition. Funny as hell. Good film to watch. Bit American.

Underworld, rise of the lycans, Very undramatic. Good film overall but was expecting something a bit more intense rather than focusing on the main characters. Not as good as the others.

Punisher : War Zone. Brilliant action film. Very well choroeographed and directed. I enjoyed this film very much. Especially the fist through the head bit. Storyline wasn't brilliant but action sequences were top class. Stevenson was good as the Punisher, mainly because he is like 7ft tall.

Tropic Thunder
Haha, seen it 7 times now. Good film. "I don't feel so good, seriosuly, my skin hurts!"

Going to see Lesbian Vampire Killers and currently downloading Surveillance, and Changeling (not released here yet) which according to IMDB are very good and seem like films I would like.

I saw Gran Torino the other night, and again, not exactly what i was expecting..
But, Clint put in a storming performance, he plays the grumpy old man very very well.
And considering he's gotta be in his 70's he's still as hard as nails.
I agree with the comments on the other actors though, it wasnt a good performance from any of them, although the girl wasnt too bad.

Overall a good film i reckon, and worth going to watch

Just got to add my 2p on Gran Torino. Not what I expected. Overplayed the growling. Way too long, could have been a 45 minute made for TV job. Some good one liners, which almost saves it. Predictable ending. Clint should avoid singing.

Slumdog millionaire isn't meant to compete with Bollywood for Indian-ness. It was made with Hollywood money, and directed b Frankie Boyle.

I liked it. As with all of his movies, regardless of the subject matter, he can have you on the edge of your seat for the entire film.

I heard lots of people going home to have happy-wanks after watching slumdog millionaire.

I thought about watching it.

Then I saw an advert on TV, and realised it was a bollywood film.

That was the end of that idea.

The Hangover is a really funny film thats worth watching at the moment - still gotta get round to Gran Torino but a few friends who's opinions on films are usually spot on have said it was ace, so it's definately on the "to do" list. I thought changeling was pretty good too.

I recently watched (most of) Bronson https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1172570/ Totally opposite to what i was expecting, i'm not really sure what to make of the film really, would be good if others have seen it.

Going to watch Watchmen tonight, hopefully it's worth the 3 hours it runs for.

Thought slumdog millionaire was the biggest pile of hyped up shite. If it wasn't for all the film critics spoojing over it week after week after week then my expectations wouldn't have been as high. And I wouldn't have been disappointed.

Quality racist abuse in Gran Torino, what a way to go out for Clint. (I presume anyway...he's ancient now, can't have much more of an acting career to go)

V for Vendetta

Ok Start with Fast and Furious. Bit of a guilty pleasure really, I have to say I really bloody enjoyed it. I think it was the eight year old kid in me who started bouncing up and down on the sofa and shouting (internally of course).

I thought the plot was mature, the acting was the best in any FATF film, and was on a par with a lot of other reasonable hollywood fare. I thought the car scenes were tacked on, and if it didn't have the cars or the FATF lineage it would have been a semi reasonable cop/crime thriller. My Girlfriend thought it was pants. The car bits were unrealistic but good to watch though. I'd give it 4/10 if I was trying to impress a bird with my movie knowledge, but 9/10 for enjoyment.

Star Trek Had some good bits for trek fans, but I actually didn't like it. Has a massive plot 'twist' which I consider to be a bit of a cop out. It could have been exquisite, but instead it was above average. Simon Pegg was rubbish which is a shame because he's obviously fallen into the trap of believing he can do anything, which he clearly can't. He should stick to playing himself and most definately avoid accents. 6/10

Angels and Demons Good movie escapism, and entertaining but I wouldn't choose to watch it over another film I don't think. Afterwards it felt a bit like a TV movie filmed in rome with good special effects. Tom Hanks, what were you thinking? Well, the Paycheck obviously!! And as for Ewan "Long Way" McGregor-Booringman, Choose an accent, irish, italian or Scottish... Jeeeez! 3/10

V For Vendetta Why didn't I go and see this in the cinema? This film is so close to being a masterpiece, and is probably as close as Hollywood ever will get. I believe it to be this way despite of the director who was a bit of an amateur as I understand it. It had depth, it was set in the UK which added familiarity and a change from the normal Hollywood crap and it had a good plot, interesting characters, good acting and Stephen Fry having a whale of a time. It wasn't without humour, and although dark was just dark enough, and not overdone. Bloody good bit of film!! It also captured the Nanny state mood amazingly accurately. Every one who is even remotely disgruntled at our current government should watch it. Which is ironic as it was supposed to be based on what would happen if a Labour government dismantled nuclear weapons in the eighties, and then the conservatives became facists!! Did I mention that I like this film? 9/10

Night at the museum 2 Quite funny, a bit like the first one... some good humour, some good action, a pretty good plot but none of that matters because there is something immensely sexy about Amy Adams dressed as Amelia Aerhart. I just really like Sassy 1930's women in tight jodphurs I suppose. Worth watching just for her, she was perfect from start to finish, and twice as perfect when you could see her backside on screen. A good film. Without Amy Adams it would be a 6 or 7 out of 10, but she elevates it to 9/10 easily. Which is odd because she's also in Catch Me If You Can and she's not that hot in that.
