I quite often feel the urge to rant about nonsensical or inane subjects. Today's subject, if you will; flip flops.
The heat wave which has swept the country has been very welcome after the last couple of forgettable summers. One thing that puzzles me though is the infatuation with flips flops. Now I perfectly understand their place if you're unfortunate enough to live in an impoverished third world country and you're below the bread line. Why, though, do women who own a dozen other pairs of shoes choose to wear a couple of bits of foam held together with cheap plastic?
It's warm, yes I get it, but that's not enough. Shoes are generally supposed to offer comfort and support to your feet. Flip flops do neither. Do your feet really get that sweaty? Put it like this, I work in an air-conditioned office and the bastard things are everywhere. It may be thirty two degrees outside, but inside it's no warmer than a mid-October afternoon and, roughly the same temperature as the rest of the year at your desk. You don't feel the urge to wear flip flops in January do you?
Why does this concern me? Well they look ridiculous, but that on its own is not enough to be bothered about. If it was then my next target would be teenagers who reckon they look awesome by hanging their trousers down below their arses. No, it's the infernal 'flap, flap, flap' sound as they walk past which makes me want to tear the offending items from their feet and force feed it to them. If you want to show off your scabby feet and half painted toe nails then, by all means, crack on. Please have some consideration for those of us whose hearing is functional though. |

I'm wearing 'sports' flip flops. 
They go across the toes as I can't cope with anything between my toes. I have curbed the 'flap' sound by forcing them tightly on and walking differently whenever I go down the corridor to make a brew.
I'm considerate like that. 
Oh and we have no aircon here.

Might I also add to this those ridiculous sandal type flip flop things some people wear. You know the ones, they cover the big toe but not the others... are these for people who happen to have cold big toes even on the hottest days, when the other toes are trying to spread out to get cool, the big toe continues to try and muscle in on them to get more heat, therefore it requires seperating!
And the Nike or Adidas or whatever make trainer they are that have a seperate big toe compartment. They look effing stupid!! Do we have toes to work together for balance or made to be seperated coz they keep arguing over where to go next!?

Indeed.
Someone here will be able to confirm that I frequently make my disapproval of flip flops apparent via this forum.
Flip flops might be nice and airy, but lets see what hapens when you stub your toe on something or you have to 'run' (ha ha, running in flip flops... ) because you couldn't give a mugger a firm kick in the nutsack.
The most impractical footwear money can buy.

I am wearing sandals a step up from flip flops. I am posh and all
I dont fancy hot, sweaty feet thats why and I am only in my house. When I leave I will put on proper shoes.

I was once forced to do a few days field work in them after killing my trainers. Admittedly, not having sweat feet was nice.
Not being able to run after the lizards (without gnarling your toes uncomfortable), sand/twigs/thorns getting under your heel/toes etc forces you to wear socks, and then to cap it all we went somewhere muddy and wet. Brambells, human excrement and general soggyness was ghastly. Ended up leaving the offending socks at a bus stop.
Fucking midget footed spanish bastards. Luckily I got some trainers brought over by the ex.

I comfortably walk miles in flip flops...
I work as a lifeguard and wear flip flops every time I work, on my feet most of the time and can easily walk a mile round the pool in 20 minutes. I have also worn them for 2 weeks straight while camping, although after that my heels became so badly cracked they bled.
I can run in them easily enough, practiced that when running to work because of being nearly late. They don't rub and I don't get blisters, not stubbed my toe in them for a long time, they take up no room in a bag compared to trainers and are perfect for camping when it is raining.
Don't have a problem with them myself.
