Is my bike a ringer?

Hi all,

I purchased a nice little 1986 RD125LC Mk2 in April and have been slowly restoring it, The problem I have is that I have found an auction on Ebay whilst I was browsing for parts, for another RD125LC in the same colour, by the same seller, with the exact same Registration number? only difference between the two bikes is that the other bike is the YPVS model...

What should I do???

Are you sure the seller isn't just beng lazy and using the same photos, or has he/she listed the reg no in the advert? Either way, I would be contacting the seller to ask what the hell is going on. Also, try putting the reg plate into www.askmid.com and see it if lists the YPVS part of the model or not.

I know the photo's on the new auction are new due to the YPVS equipment on the bike for sale. also the number plate has a different font. The bike is on the Insurers database, probably would have been tugged by the constabulary by now if it wasn't and HPI shows clear, still waiting for V5 doc, only have part will get onto the DVLA. will wait till document arrives before stirring up crap, I don't want to lose the bike, I've already spent a lot on parts for it

I'd get onto the phone to the police ASAP. If nothing else, these bikes may be stolen.... wouldn't you rather see the bloke caught before he nicks yours back again?

Check frame number if possible for tampering.

If you don't report, you're storing up trouble for the future as speeding tickets etc any other owners of "your" bike gather may come back to you....

Only other option is to go back to the bloke you bought it from and explain why he'll be giving you a full refund (and then shopping him ).

Ebay may be liable for the money you paid as an auction house, but I wouldn't bet on it.

When you bought it did you see the V5, get given the new keepers slip and are waiting for the new V5 to be sent through by the DVLA, or are you waiting for the seller to send you the V5?

Currently have a V5 slip, filled out a V62 to get a new V5c as he has not sent the registration docs to the DVLA. Once the bike is in my name I will be more comfortable with jumping up and down, but I have spent a lot of money on the bike already so I do not want to lose it! but it is insured in my name, the bike came from Plymouth and it was taxed at my local post office in York by me so, so far so good. But I am holding off putting any more new bits on it until things are sorted one way or another.

Does anyone know anything about Damerells in Plymouth, as bought the bike would have failed an MOT badly but came with a brand new certificate from them? Their name shows up on photo's of documents on the other bike too... are they dodgy?

Don't hold off reporting it......

Get it done now before someone else gets suckered.... Don't bother with ebay, go straight to you local police with all the info including what you have said about the garage.
Take photo's of your bike and prints of the ebay sales....

I would also look back throught the guy past sales and see if he has done this before...

Main thing DO NOT contact him and give him chance to do a runner.

The same seller on ebay is selling an identical bike with the same reg number but with different pictures? Get the cops involved right away!

I see the April auction was Private - this stops anyone except eBay/you from spotting the same bike sold twice. I see they didn't leave you any feedback either - nice of them.


Phone the cops right away. Or even better print the auction off, take it down to your local nick and tell them you have already been sold this bike by that person earleir in the year but the dealership haven't yet sent off the log book. Tell them you are worried that you might have been sold a ringer and ask them to look your bike over. Have you looked for the frame numbers yet on your own bike - they will be stamped on the right side of the headstock.

After the cops have been to see the seller (not before) I would also use the 'report this auction' button on the current ebay auction and send them the auction number for the bike you bought and let them know you've contacted the police.

P.S. - the LAST thing you want to do is phone or go and see the dealer (or have him get wind of this thread). If you do that the other bike will suddenly disappear.

Your Private auction when you bought your own bike - as the buyer you should be able to still see it as it's less than 90-days old (just). Get it up on your screen and print it off (or use File - save as web page complete or save as web archive). Scan all and any receipts especially from the shop and keep them safe - take copies to the cops.

Act now Rich - it's actually an offence to fail to report crime and the cops will ask you why you didn't report it to them when you first learned of it.

Not convinced Damerell's workshop is the best- but from what I've heard they are more likely to find things that "need" fixing than pass a bike that shouldn't. In short, I'd say they are pretty unlikely to do a dodgy MOT- chances are the plate was on another bike. Call the rozzers.
