Camera nerds.

Am looking to upgrade, the d40 is starting to outstay its welcome.

So, was looking at the D200, seems my best bet - so wheres the place to buy one, i want to spend about £700 max with lens.

Or get the D60. I got it for £290 with 18-55m VR Lens.

I think you're going to struggle for under £700, google is showing £800 odd as the cheapest that it can find.

I can do secondhand, ebay says body only £400-500.

Could stretch to about £900 as i've got a lot of kit for the d40 i'll get about 400 for.

The d60/d5000 are consumer cams like the d40, the d200 is a semi pro with better build quality, if i were going down the mainstream route i'd get a d80/90.

Luke, that is tempting as its a bloody good cam, its just i've always used nikon and can't get on with the canon's.

Well, i have heard they are pretty damn hot on sharp images with low noise, will do some quick research.
What are lens prices like?

Hi

The D200 is a pretty old camera now. Surprised you can still find any new ones (although Mifsuds have a 2nd hand one for £500). D300 seems to start at about £1040 which is outside your budget.

D90 might be worth a look, being a step up from the D40~D60 range.

Lens wise might be worth keeping what you already have.

Hi

Errr, Nikon make lenses in white as well (as do Sony).

Canons major errors with the auto focus on the 1Dmk3 lost them a lot of the pro users that they had worked hard to gain. Especially when it happened just after Nikon had finally pulled their finger out and largely caught up or passed Canon with their digital bodies.

Hmmm the 50D looks good at first sight, 15mp cmos sensor & magnesium alloy body, but seems to have a few issues and doesn't seem worth the extra pennies over the 40D.

If i do opt for a canon, then the 40D will be my choice, seriously considering one of these now.

The 40D is getting on now, while the 18-55 and basic 75-300 lenses are not great (the 3rd party lens equivalents are better for the same money).

What have you got for your current Nikon body?

18-55mm kit lens

Dörr filters - uv/circular polariser/8x macro filter

4gb sdhc card with sd card reader, Mini tripod.

Hi

No need to sell the lenses, filters or flash if you stick with Nikon.

While Canon and Nikon both make decent cameras, not sure there is enough improvement from one to the other to make jumping ship worthwhile (unless you have the money to jump ship again when you want another change).

I bought a canon 40D about a year ago as most of my friends have canon DSLR's so I can borrow many lenses apart from the kit 18-55 IS and 75-300 I got with it for £780ish and it's a great cam. I would have gone Nikon otherwise but having tried a 30D first it did what I wanted very well. But tbh the nikons do have much better high iso noise reduction (d300+) over the canon 40D and 50D etc at the mo. they are both good systems but I know a fair few pros like will cheung etc who have been canon guys through and through that have made the jump to Nikon (high end) and liked it. Admittedly give it 6 months and the tables will turn again but they both have good points and will all take damn good pics with a little practice and the right glass.The main point is spend time trying different settings etc and get to know your rig! Luke had many superb results from his last canon DSLR before moving up to the 50D which just goes to show that it's not just the cam but the user that knows how to get the best from it. I've manage to squeeze some brilliant pics out of the d40 and even bridge cams over the last 4 or 5 years, its just now i'm starting to get piccy on noise & resolution.

Will take a little time to get used to reaching all controls quickly to get pics with no auto mode for those snappy moments but should be all good.

Just thought i would update, i got the D200 + 18-200 vr II and i'm chuffed to bits with it, very quick and all buttons + functions are well placed for quick tweaking of settings, also the Vr lens is definitely worth the money.

In the end it was £900 all in, flogged the d40 minus flash for £380 so its all good.

Luke, would be good to meet up sometime for rides + shoots, i'd still like to see how the canon feels + performs

I found the D200's noisy at ISO800 or above (same sensor as the D80 I believe except higher data throughput).

I personally would have bought a 2nd hand D300 or if I had no intention of using it in extreme weather (rain, etc) then the D90 would have been my choice (pro or not).

Still, I have to save for those D700's


The D200's do feel good to use (got to have a grip), have all the features you'd want and can quickly use a (or more) SB600/800/900's off camera with CLS which is handy.
