Hi

virgin poster

I would like to do some green laning and trail type riding nothing too heavy.
The above bike is within my budget and seems a good buy,just wondering is there anything in particular i should look out for when buying one of these?
Im not well up on offroad bikes at all so any advice taken.

Also is there anywhere that i can find the max width of the handlebars as i need to know if this would fit down the lane at the side of my house... lol

1 downside really parts and finding them.
Drz are good for greenlanes and wr and a crf250x not the crf250r(the 250r is the mx bike) and finding parts for them is very easy.

You can pick up a 05 crf for about £1750 with tax and test and parts must honda parts from 04-09 will fit it from the 250 4 stroke range even bits of the mx bikes(there both the same really).

GasGas parts are simple to get from GasGas UK with next day delivery.

CRFs and the like require a fair bit of maintenance - oil changes, valves etc and are very expensive when they go wrong.

The Gasser will require little maintenance and rebuilds are much easier and much cheaper.

An excellent bike for the purpose. They can be very fast, but they can also be ridden slowly easily too.
I'd take one over a 4 stroke any day.

Bars are standard dirt-bike bars, not sure exactly what the measurement is, but should be pretty consistent if you can find some others to measure.

DRZ was the original choice but now my budget has shrunk a bit i find it hard to fit in a decent DRZ.

Id be looking at spending about £1400.Being new to offroad bikes i only discovered the gas gas yesterday lol and done a bit of reading up on it and it seems to tick all the right boxes.
I know the lane at the side of my house is about 30 inches wide so i hope they are not wider than that as its important to me to have it out of sight



Also looking at some bikes for sale some have indicators fitted and others not,are they removed to stop them breaking off?
As my understanding was that the EC models are road legal

You don't need indicators to be road legal. Some will have not put them on because they do tend to get broken off.

The EC is significantly lighter than a DRZ, as well as having a broader range of power and more peak power, oh and better suspension.
Only thing to watch out for is that you shoudn't use (the little it has) engine braking to go down hills too much as this means the engine isn't get lube while being under pressure.

When going downhill with a closed throttle on ANY 2 stroke,it recieves oil either via the pump which is not FULLY shut off or via premix which again because bike is running is getting oil

With the throttle shut you're only getting the amount of fuel (and therefore lube) to keep the engine ticking over. i.e < 1k rpm

But your revs will be a lot higher than that. So it's not good to spend a lot of time going downhill with the throttle shut on a 2t. Premix or oil pump.

Also any dealers that keep a good stock of trail/green laning machines?

I reckon that they would be a great bike TBH! The 300cc motor must have some decent bottom and top end power, and in such a light machine it would feel very snappy i would say.

I saw a guy ride a KTM300EXC out of a housing estate onto a main road once, and as he short shifted through the gears the front wheel was just about staying down. Id love a 300cc top end on my KMX project, but i could not live a with a 2t bike that was pre-mix lubricated.

Its hard to find a decent one for sale around £1500

Anyway i will keep looking till the end of the month,if i can't find one i might start looking at ktm 200/250 exc

The KTM 300 will be pretty similar, as will the 250s from both.
My KTM 200 has a very different 'character' - it's a bit lighter, but it really begs to (ab)used; it'll really reward if you get it right, but bite back if you get it wrong. Not sure about the Gas Gas 200, but quite probably similar.

I presume you've checked the sticky at the top of the forum for places to look for bikes for sale.

@G...yes i will keep an eye on those places,thanks.As you say the KTM's would be a similar machines so if one of them comes up for sale first i could be tempted
