I can't help but smell a fishy rat here. If things had gone wrong with that plane and, say, it had crashed who would be responsible?

The airline. They at least did a bit of a background check on him first.

I wonder what was wrong with it in the first place.

if some guy came forwars and said "yup i am a mechanic for planes" i would pick ANYONE else but him to go and check the plane out.

He was an engineer for their partner company who they share the contract with engineering work (or something like that) they checked out all his credentials and just saved lots of time.

I cant see why people (you guys :p) are upset about people/companies making good judgements and descisions not tied up in 2 miles of red tape.

So, did they expect him to fix the fault and stay behind, missing his flight? I'd say the odd's are that he would be on the plane, considering it was his only way home.
