I've been sent quite a few letters and emails asking me to take a test ride on the new Moto Guzzi range. I have caved into the pressure and have arranged a test ride on a V11 Le Mans Rosso Corsa.

https://www.combattiva.it/motoguzzi/gfxnew/modelli/grandi/v11rs_01.jpg

I have no idea what these bikes are like so if anyone has a clue please let me know. Smile It will be my first time on a bike with any fairings. Surprised

There are another three bikes you can test. I think the Cafe Sport looks best to me, but I thought I'd try something different.

Here are the details from two of the emails I have had from different dealers. I will be at In Moto, in Croydon on Sunday at about 1pm if anybody fancies meeting up.

Ewwwwww a Moto Scuzzi, Try getting one into neutral Laughing Laughing Laughing

I had a V50 for a while (something which I'd really want to forget) and it was a pain, don't know if Moto Guzzi have come on any since Piaggio (or was it Cagiva) took over them.

I know there still a pain with gearboxes and such.

Don't worry, the chances of me actually buying one are slim to zero, but it will be nice to have a go of riding something other than my CB500. Very Happy

i love the look of them, i almost got a test of the unfaired one last year but i was too busy and then they sold it.
I'd just be worried it was as crap as some people say they are

fwarrrr, i likes them... i'd never own one though, for the price their relyability is questionable, but then the same can be said about some other bikes....
The unfared V11 is my absoloute fave looking bike, but then i am a strange little man.

Yeah I prefer the look of this one:

https://www.combattiva.it/motoguzzi/gfxnew/modelli/grandi/v11cs_02.jpg

...but as I say I feel like trying a faired bike.

So what kind of ride should I expect from it. Bearing in mind my bike is a CB500 and the Moto Guzzi is a 1100cc V-Twin, and I have never ridden anything more powerful than my bike?

Neither. They were taken over by Aprilia, and to be fair a V50 is now a 20 year old bike. Bit like saying that an R6 is dodgy because you used to own an XS250 and it was horrible Wink .

To the bike in question, expect a weird riding experience. Expect it to take you quite a while to get used to it (couple of hours riding). They are long lived bikes and work well for people who ride them in the style that they require, but work badly if you just try and jump on one.

Oh, and have fun with the back end rising up as you open the throttle, from the torque reaction.

All the best

Keith

The guy at the dealers said I would get about an hour on it. Enough for a quick blast but not enough to get used to it I guess.

What do you mean the back end rising up? I thought the front end would rise up or am I missing something here?

Hi

Due to the way the gears work on the back wheel with the shaft drive the back of the bike tends to rise up when you accelerate.

All the best

Hmm... shaft drive. So I won't be pulling any wheelies on it then (Not that I can anyway!)?

and if you rev it at standstill the torque reaction can catch you out and tip you off (maybe)

Damn rumors and stereotypes! I can wheelie my shaft driven XJ900 just fine thank you Razz

I'd love to have a go on one - let us know how it goes.

Wheelies are meant to be more difficult on shaft drive bikes, but not impossible.

Used to be a guy around Chelsea Bridge who had a party trick of wheelying a Z1300 high enough to break the rear light and then bringing it down again, all under control.

All the best
