And what about the 'long straights' that Keith mentioned? What's so wrong about doing high speeds etc if there's nothing but empty road?

Erm, the bends that appear from nowhere perhaps? There were no long straights that were safe enough to get to any such speed.

nice one.

cant understand the weekend bikers that go up and down it all day long though

like someone said before it has a reputation as a dangerous road partly because of the born again weekend power rangers binning brand new r1's on there and killing themselves on the balcony e.t.c

go as slow as you like on there and dont let any car driver put you off when going round one of the bends

dont take in the views either mate. that was my mistake when i had just started biking

have to go on some better roads if everyone is still going out on saturday

My mistake then. Thought Keith had mentioned long straights on that road upon which you could get up to high speed.

there are a couple of longish straights

i think the long straight he means is just past the pub going to buxton where it goes to a 60.

usualy a high speed pursuit car waiting on the road on the left

a very overated road though

but as karen said it scares the pants off you the first time you ride on it. probably because of the statistics attached to it

rode down it the other week after coming back from buxton and saw a recently binned r1 ! on the balcony Thumbs Down

Apparently one of the accidents on that road involved a sheep.

Was that you Keith??? I remember you saying you ran one over!

Nope, not me. I ran a sheep over in North Wales between Porthmadoc and Bala years ago.

There are some straights on that road. More towards the Buxton end, but plenty of space to go very quickly without having to go near the bends quickly.

All the best

Keith

Shocked I would never, I was very impressed with Karen's riding considering she hasn't been doing it very long. I certainly would not of taken them much faster (as proved on the way back down Laughing )

There were no cops around at all yesterday, like I said I think we picked a good time of day.

There probably were cops, you just didn't see them. The police use helicopters and aparently even own a fireblade!

As for the roads, last time I was out there it was early January and it was bloody cold and wet and all you could see on the roads was a rainbow of Diesel. Up towards Cat & Fiddle I was doing about 30mph and couldn't see further than the person infronts brake lights! There is almost no chance to speed as any time the road straighens out and you have a chance to open the throttle there is a speed camera, Or a sheep steps out in front of you!

This was about 7am on a Monday morning. Came round a corner and saw the sheep and thought "I don't trust him" so slowed down and moved to the middle of the road. Just got to the point of thinking "There is now way he can get from there to here now" when he did.

I ran straight over its shoulder blades and killed it outright.

All the best

Keith

Is that the road towards Buxton from Macclesfield by Man Tor or whatever its called? And there's a pub at the top (highest pub in UK i think) and always has bikers on it and people para and hanggliding off it?

Used to live in Macclesfield and used to go Buxton a few times a year.

Edited to say now i've read the whole post then my questions been answered already. I'll agree it's a pretty scary road even in a car. Used to see lots of bikes on the balcony. Never saw any coppers though.

Nice one Karen for making it in one piece. Thumbs Up I'd like to do it one day.

New Zealands roads are very similar to the Cat & Fiddle with tight blind turns and great views. Done it by car but bike would be something special. Scary but fun. Twisted Evil

The thing with this road is bends look allot tamer than they are, if underestimate it that little bit too much then your in trouble... which i suspect some have done, thinkin they can go pritty fast only to realise the bend is tightening any they have now way of adjusting their line to suit... not that thats any different to allot of other roads... i could show you roads around derby that would make harderned trackday aces poo themselfs.
Best roads ive been on were in the lakes though, shame its 200miles away for me Razz
Like i said its allot less fun when its snowing/gale force winds/peeing it down, comeing from buxton it might be a loveley spring day, closer you get the worse it will get.. but its still better than going through stoke and then a horrible ride up the m6 Neutral
damn i want to go for a ride now Crying or Very sad

I was in stoke/Newcastle-U-Lyme the other day looking for DK Motorcycles.

What a dull place it is, plus bouncing down the M6 at 95MPH on a GS500E isnt good, LOL

Anyone know where DK is at all?

I live too far from there but from the replies it seems pretty sketchy. A bad road down here has got to be at the bottom off Porlock Hill near Minehead Somerset on the A39. Smile

Well if you want to give finding it another bash then I'm sure one of us locals can meet you somewhere (Junction 16 is not far from me). It's not difficult to find....really! Mr. Green

From junction 16, assuming you came from the north go left at the roundabout, get off the A500 at the second exit and go right on the big roundabout onto the A34 towards newcastle town centre. Keep on the A34 and go straight over the next roundabout, through a set of lights and over the next roundabout which has a McDonalds on it, through 2 sets of lights and straight over another roundabout. You will see a row of shops on the right hand side of the road, one being cissbury leathers, as you pass these shops you will go through 2 small sets of lights for pedestrians. Not far down the road you will come to another set of lights, used for allowing traffic out from the road on your left. Make sure you are in the right hand lane just before these lights as a couple of hundred yards down the road you will have to turn around just before a small set of traffic lights to head back up the other way, when you get back to the big set of traffic lights DK is right on them on your left, if its a saturday there should be plenty of bikes around going in and out of there! Thumbs Up
