Urgent help requested - Valve clearance woes!!

I know it's a bit tossy putting urgent in the title, but meh.

I'm trying to do my tappets on the slabby (GSXR750 G [86]) and having undone the valve cover bolts, the cover wont budge. Even with rubber mallet taps.

Now Haynes did not mention these two bolts, are they also vavle cover bolts? I don't want to remove them and then find they hold something else on which has then dropped into my engine

Assuming it is the same as the Bandit you do not need to touch those. They are just blanking bolts for an oilway across the cover.

There are 2 locating dowels which are probably what is holding the cover in place.

Any idea how i can budge the cover? Book of Lies says don't pry it off, obvously to avoid damaging the gasket. It's not moving at all.

In the Bandit manuals it does tell you to remove the 4 bolts (Banjo bolts) that are near the plug wells.

Yes, they bolt down through the cover into the head.

I got the cover off easily after removing those bolts. Turned the engine so the cam lobes were in the right position etc.

Started checking the actual clearances, and now have another problem.

How DO I actually adjust them?

It says screw and locknut, yes there's a locknut, but where on earth does the screwdriver go to adjust them?!? It's just a square nobule thingy, there's nowhere to screw!?!

Am I being completely thick?

You need a square nobule thing spanner.

Once the locknut is undone, you should be able to twiddle them by hand.

If you need a tool, looks like a bicycle spoke key would fit those nicely. Or a bit of flat bar with a small notch filed into the end.

Same as the ones on my ybr, you can turn them by hand once lock nut is loose or as i did use an old bike spanner and file or grind a little groove into it. But to be honest finger tight or a slight turn with pliers will do it, it doesnt take much really.

Stinkwheel has answered you well, but just a triffle concerned that the nearest valve in the picture appears to already have the locknut undone.

I'm almost totally certain you couldn't use them on a large number of older, aircooled kawasakis which have the followers built into the rocker box and little round tappet inspection covers. Not sure how many other bikes were made to a similar design.

You can JUST get an open spanner on the locknuts on the girlfriends GPz305 and turn it one flat at a time, reversing the spanner between flats.
