No SORN

I've got an old bike in my garage that I haven't ridden since 2005. I haven't SORNed it, so if I try to get road tax for it now (in order to sell it) what sort of fine am I looking at?

It may have changed since, so don't take this as gospel...but I was in a similar position with a car a few years ago. It had been parked up in a parking space for months, but was technically off the public highway.

Anyway, they tried to do me for it, so I got a few of my decent neighbours to sign something which said it hadn't been anywhere since whatever, and they eventually left me alone.

The rules have changed since of course, and they might not be quite so quick to roll over, but my point is; don't just accept whatever they try and throw at you. Argue your case, and get witnesses if necessary, and fight it.

I had an old car parked on the mother in laws drive for months, no tax not declared sorn, heard nowt from dvla or anywhere.

When I part-exed my CBR the dealer didn't complete and send off the V5. Needless to say I forgot to do my bit as well with the excitement of having a new bike.

Promptly got a renewal for the tax on the CBR & when I queried it I found out I was still the registered keeper and was thus liable

Cue a bit of squabbling and trying to wriggle out of it but ultimately ended up with a £30 fine and they wanted the remainder of the tax from the date it ran out to me paying the fine.

Determined little bastards the DVLA when they want to be

I put my old BMW back on the road 2 months ago (after sitting with no tax for 6 months) and they didnt say anything, still no letter.

I would advise getting it taxed in the post office, when you do it over the phone or net they scan all your info the DVLA data bases - you have a better change with some old dear in the post office who will just look at your forms and give you the tax disk.

I forgot to sorn one of my cars, think I'll ring up and ask why I haven't had my sorn letter yet and act daft. (I should have done it in April).

You'll be fine. I've never sorn'd a vehicle yet and left them without tax countless times.

Right, I've finally got round to getting the road tax and following your advice, I'm going to get it at the Post Office. Their web site says I need to take:

A valid insurance certificate or cover note – photocopies, renewal invitations, facsimiles, policy receipts or schedules cannot be used

I haven't had any insurance for this bike for ages. If my current insurance certificate (for an R1) states I can ride any other bike 3rd party, can I use this?

A valid MOT (Vehicle Test Certificate) if required – your car tax reminder will tell you if you need this

Am I ok to go and get an MOT on the bike when I haven't got any road tax? Do I have to transport the bike there rather than ride it?

I used eBike Insurance Pay As You Go and got a quote for £15/month Third Party only with no excess. So I'm going to get that, book my MOT in for next weekend, then turn up at the Post Office and hope they give me the road tax no questions asked

Post office has nothing to do with tax.
Shouldn't be a problem getting tax, but possible the DVLA may send something in the post at some time.
