What will and what won't bring insurance down. What's the best tagging kit? Bets alarms etc.

Cheers

My insurance company told me a (thatcham) or a cold seal alarm/ imobiliser i think it was , will bring ur insurance down! On mine about 80 quid saving BUT i rang around a few places and they where looking at £300 quid for the alarm/imobilser and fitting fee!
I want to get an alarm i dont really feel safe just leaving my bike with the steering lock on! Twisted Evil

And thats all i know

Alarms don't tend to do much, but annoy people... an immobiliser probably is a bit more use as the theif has to get a van rather than ride away with your bike.
Thatcham approved is the most well known certification that insurers accept. There are different grades, 'A' being the best.. remember also that while it may only save £80 it will save you that the next year as well and should a bit to the resale value.

Naa, just stick the steering full left and turn the ignition left past off. It's a metal bar that sticks out of the ignition unit and stops the bars moving

i thought that with my CG

4 steps to steal a steering locked bike
1. put bike in neutral
2. get on bike
3. yank handlebars backwards while sliding off the back
4. roll bike away on the back wheel

Good luck to any geezer trying to get my bike on it's back wheel.
It's bloody HEAVY Smile
But the alarm should scare or slightly irritate them:)

Mine came with Smartwater, which insurers like.

Then I fitted a Datatool System 3, which insurers like.
Agreed, alarms are useless in that no-one comes running, but they rock when you can park outside your house and you'll hear it go off. By the time they're working on the immobiliser / rolling it into the transit, I'll be out there with my Big Sword.

Then, for extra peace of mind, i've got a Thatcham approved U lock on the back wheel and a diddy little disc lock on the front - so as to make the 'rolling into van' more of a pain for the theiving scum.

Granted, all that money doesn't equate to that much of a discount on insurance, but it makes me feel a lot better about parking on-street and the alarm's an added-value thing when it comes to selling.

When i got my RS125 I was told it has an imobilser fitted but i still dont know what the hell it does!

Could some one explain what it does/how it works please?

I also have a BIG chain for the back wheel (the chain and lock cost 80 squid) I think the chain brought insurrance down a bit.

I usually cover my bike if I leave it parked anywhere...it's an extra little bit of hassle, but I reckon that it will be worth it...

The only way to keep it safe is to chain it to something solid. Like you've all said the biggest risk is from a couple of lads throwing it in a van. Fucking gypo's Evil or Very Mad

i only have a little disk lock, and my column lock doesn't work, but i have a cunning plan.
i park next to nice bikes. woh gonna nick a 20 year old cb when its parked next to a brand new sv650.

admittedly, who would nick an old cb 250 in the first place...

To be honest, I'm not really that worried that it will be nicked, 'cos I'll be covered by insurance! (ok, there's the claims business etc...)...but I would hate it more to find my bike lying on it's side, and totally trashed...Evil or Very Mad

1. I want to kill the ba**ards
2. Cool i can get a better bike now

very strange i should have been totally gutted and upset, my friend absolutly flipped and i had to calm him down and it wasent even his bike.

Mmm, but getting a few bikes nicked on you will make it real difficult to get insurance in the future

All the best

Alphadot are loads of tiny little...dots... which contain info about the owner. If the bike is stripped or sole the Alphadot Cru, or the police can wave a scanner over the bits and find out who it belongs to.
Datatag is the same thing. I dunno which is better
