I was thinking of getting a dark visor for my helmet but have been told they are very illegal - Is this true?

I used to have one a a Bell Mk1 years ago and thought it was great with a black visor. Not so good at night but still OK.
Thanks,

William

If I remember correctly - no (but they are if you are night riding). Smile

You can get legal tinted (smoked) ones but black ones are illegal.

Or a fine, one of the two.

pretty sure it's not an endorsable offence and tbh you have to be pretty unlcuky to get a tug purely for a visor

of course if you are riding like a twat then they will add it to the list Wink

I have resisted the urge to get a race can for my R1 so maybe (just maybe) I will throw caution to the wind and buy an illegal black visor Twisted Evil

That's because of the peering into the drivers windows of arse-hole cars drivers and letting them see their own reflection and not your eyes, that is! Laughing

Hmmm, I wonder if Shoei do them... Whistle

I always use a black visor when the weather/time allows. I ride past a police station every day and I've never had any problems. As Mr C says been given nods by police riders and sat chatting to them at lights.

If I remember correctly it's a £20 fine and non endorsable. I carry a clear visor with me in one of those visor carrying thingies, I'll swap it if it causes them that much offense.

What sort of cost were yours Mr C?

If it's going to be this bright most of the summer I think I'm going to need to invest. Wink

Just checking...

There is a legality difference when it comes to dark plastic visors that are attached to your lid and the coloured 'visors' that you can stick on the inside of the plastic visor right?

As in, black/dark plastics are illegal and the sticky ones on the inside are legal - something about if they can be removed for night riding then it's ok???

Question Shocked Question Confused?? I am!

I think inserts are classed as temporary so aren't classified in the same way as a visor.

I seem to recall Major Grooves getting told off for an insert, simply because they don't allow the legal amount of light through. I may be wrong though.

As long as you don't take the piss and wear your dark visor at night, it's not something you're likely to be pulled for.

Crying or Very sad

Dammit, so much money, and the bike's got its MOT Thursday. Hope they don't notice the front winkers Twisted Evil

Think I'll stick to visor inserts until I get me new lid.

A legal tinted visor will allow at least 50% light transmission and will be marked up as BS4110 XA, YA or ZA whereas a black non legal visor will allow 20% light transmission and is illegal.

Level two penalty which is a £30 non endorsable fixed penalty unless it goes to court inwhich case the fine can increase to £500.

As far as inserts are concerned, if they are attached to a BS approved visor, then perfectly legal and there is nothing the Police can do about it.

Many full time motorcycle cops themselves wear black visors, and 99% of them agree that they are a safety feature in bright conditions. Where they would get annoyed is when it is dark and someone still continues to wear their black visor, but if you carry a clear one with you, then this situation shouldn't arise.

By the way, it is perfectly legal (albeit stupid) to wear a legal tinted visor at night!

I take issue with 'stupid' Razz I find that in town, with streetlights, oncoming traffic and the Max Power wankers driving around with their foglights on, I can actually see better with my legal tint on as it cuts out the glare. It's only stupid where there is minimal ambient light, if there's loads if can be an advantage.

Depends on your eyesight really, I'm quite light sensitive (I wear weak sunglasses the majority of the time in the car) and the semi-tint really works for me.

I was generalising! There are always those who may have a condition that goes against the norm, but inthe majority of conditions wearing a tinted visor of any description reduces the overall level of visibility. In your case there is a medical reason, but for the majority that doesn't apply! Rolling Eyes
