Hi,
Anyone have any idea on the best Parental Control Freeware?
https://www.tucows.com/Windows/Internet/ParentalFilters/
There seem to be a few out there, many un-rated and I'm sure some may not be good enough.
I have McAfee AV, but its a business version, so it doesn't seem to cater for this.
My son has just been given a desktop for games and homework, so its time to sort it.
Any suggestions appreciated |

Don't want trojans, virii, malware etc? Don't use Windows. Do install THIS. And there are a few decent bits of software for small kids to use too, such as GCompris (which our 5 and 6 year olds use), as well as a lot of Windows games being quite compatible under Wine. Secure, free and not so prone to crashing due to user mess ups. What more could you want? ____________________ CBT February 2008 | A2 June 2008 | Yamaha YBR125 (written off) | Honda CBF125 (current) |

chrisw - The net has free games perfect for his age on it and in a year or so, he can use it as a referance for homework(although I will encouage him to use books as a first option).
I use the desktop too, so no net isn't an option really.
T1z3R - He won't be
My son has an 8yr old friend that is oftain round to play. He is quiet fascinated by my bra n knickers, he tried to pull my T-shirt up the other day and told me his Dad would approve. . LOL, I did chuckle. . .
I'm not bothered or worried about anything, just want to make it a sound environment for him. Don't want him to see anything scary. |

Netgear routers have the option to put in keywords that will block url's....so think of all the bad words that you know and put them in...that way the router will block most of the traffic before it gets to the pc (use fixed ip's and put your own pc in the DMZ so you can still get your pr0n), you can also time access to the internet by IP address, we don't want little jonny on MSN at 2am do we
If it was my kid I would put vista (windows7) on the pc, at least then you have OS based parental controls...which may well be crap but the kid don't know that, and the first time you log onto his/her pc and view the parental control logs....they get the message!!
And those 'free games sites' are often a pain in the ass with their drive by installs of god only knows what, what you have to remember is kids on pc's will just click the OK and some of these sites know that (and some don't even give the option)...little jonny should have an account with no privilages, then you can't shout at him for mucking up the PC, getting a nasty trojan and infecting your pc because you are on the same network and forgot to close that shared folder.
Second thoughts, don't give kids computers they have enough pr0n on their phones ____________________ Eagles may soar.............but rats don't get sucked through jet engines!!

Just install SafeSquid, content filtering proxy (free), and set the proxy settings in the browser to use it. SafeSquid is available for both Windows as well as Linux. You can download it from https://www.safesquid.com/html/portal.php?page=126
SafeSquid, by default, has keyword filtering enabled to block porn sites. Additionally, you can enforce Google, Yahoo and Bing SafeSearch, so that searches that might result in adult content are blocked.
If you are worried about virus, spyware, etc. you can install Clam Anti Virus (free and open source) and integrate it with SafeSquid, to scan all in-coming content, and block access to infected ones. See https://www.safesquid.com/html/portal.php?page=136
If you would like to use URL Blacklist database to block access to unwanted website categories, download the database from https://www.shallalist.de (free) and use it with SafeSquid.
If you want to block porn images, try PicBlock from https://www.cinchworks.com/ (free).
I suppose this should be more that enough for you |
