 |
|
i'm 17, finishing collage next year, taking law, maths and business.
now, i'm not going to uni, and i don't really have any particular hobbies. This doesn't mean i'm a hermit but my interests (or lack of) aren't pointing me in any particular directions.
i love bikes, they're my one main interest, although i do tend to have a childlike tendancy to get addicted to something for a short time and then getting bored with it.
anyway, can anyone suggest any careers that involves bikes? in terms of a mechanic, i'm not mechanically minded, and don't understand anything to do with it. i'm not too keen on having another 2 years at college to do mechanics, as i hate jumping through educational hoops do get a qualification. i'm not a drop out or anything, i just thrive better when i'm learning real stuff.
so other than mechanics what other job aspects are there? just out of curiousity, i was wondering maybe working at my local hein gerecke |

Hi Josh
I will tell you a little story about my husband, which might inspire you.
He went to uni and studied computer type stuff, as it was what he was naturally good at. He worked at a computer suppliers where they were really, really bad employers (overclockers) which was making him really unhappy and it got to a point where his job was making him ill.
So I helped him look for jobs.
I saw an ad in the local paper for a motorbike mechanic. He's no mechanic, although can do the basics and has a passion for bikes. He said there was no point applying for it, and I said why not though? It will cost you the paper to print your CV and cover letter and a stamp.
We tailored the cover letter to explain that although he knew it was a mechanic position, he was passionate about bikes and had carried out projects on his own bikes etc etc.
They were impressed and asked him to come in on a 2 day trial. Unfortunately they said thanks for your time but we really do need someone with more experience.
A week or so later he popped in to buy some bits for his bike, and they offered him a job on the spot! As something completely different to what he had applied for...a service/warranty manager!
4 years later he deals with everything relating to the running of the business, is a trained MOT tester, and (although he will never be a millionnaire) loves his job as he's working with bikes day in day out!
So the moral of the story is, there are plenty of opportunities if you can get your foot in the door of a dealer. Maybe try to get a part time job (or even voluntary work) at a bike-related shop and see where it takes you!
Good luck! |
