Few questions/concerns about black triangle drugs, wondering if any one can help with some questions about them. Smile

"Black triangle products are new drugs and vaccines which are being intensively monitored in order to confirm the risk/benefit profile of the product"

Does anyone know about how long a drug usually stays as being black triangle?

Aren't the drugs risky because not much is known about side effects?

Black triangle drugs sound like they're really just a clinical trial using the public, which sounds like it'd be dodgy/risky. Neutral

I googled and found the following:

Aren't the drugs risky because not much is known about side effects? Not necessarily, just says that the persons the drugs were originally tested on were not necessarily the type of people that would be using the drugs in real life, hence this interim period.

Thinking I guess so, but there will always be a point in time when something goes from trial, to approved, to on the market with real live patients - just the numbers in the Trial period are smaller / larger depending on the findings.

When drugs are being developed they go through different phases of development with increasing number of patients in each. These are broadly Phase 1, 2, and 3. It is only in Phase 3 that they really start to pick up side-effects or adverse events, but even then the trial might only be a few hundred or thousand people, so very rare events might not be noticed.

So many new drugs, particularly those with new active ingredients, will have "Phase 4" observations, which basically means the drug has passed all the safety trials, just like any other drug, but the pharma company must keep a close eye on patients taking the drug so that any rare adverse events can be identified. It makes a big difference to be able to observe events once they go from a few thousand people taking them in very controlled circumstances, to tens or hundreds of thousands of people taking them in "the wild".

I wouldn't be concerned, just make sure you report any adverse events/side effects to your doctor.

What is the drug?
