PostPosted: 20:10 - 17 Jul 2002    Post subject: Nodding pecking order? Reply with quote

I just started riding a bike recently and a friend from Norway asked me whether the bikers here nod or wave to each other when they pass, as in Norway everybody waves except the Harleys who think they are in a higher class. I said I didn't know about here but that I would pay attention to find out.
So, occasionally people on bikes nod the head to me. I try nodding to some, and sometimes they nod back sometimes they don't. The couriers in London never nod, old guys on big bikes never nod, but some 'younger' looking people do.

So what is the nodding hierarchy? Being on a 125 does that put me near the bottom of the nodding pecking order, just above scooters?

Any thoughts? Question

i find i don't get any nods in town, but once you get out of central london they seem to start.

i think the sheer number of bikes, and the fact that everyone in town is concentrating on what the cars are doing, kinda messes up the nod thing.

I also nod/wave to every bike/scoot I see (as long as riding conditions allow of course). Some of the Scoot riders seem surprised that they get acknowldged, but most nod back, and I do find that the 'Cruser' riders tend to be more ignorant.

I actually got a nod from a bg mutha on a Harley yesterday. He was just pulling out of a Junction on the opposite side of the road and he nodded 1st!!!
Sometimes I think it's a little easier to almost salute. 2 fingers togerther to the helmet (Nowt rude). Easier to be seen.
Also am I the only one who changed his nodding style from when you first start biking? In the beginning it was an up-down nod, but now it's kinda diagonal. I think it's easier to discern from hitting a bump:)

I find it difficult to nod when on a 'sport or racing' type bike since the head is in an ackward position to noticingly nod, do u find the same?

i ride an NSR and usually get a lot of nods from other drivers, although it was boiling the other day so i went out with just a t shirt and pants on, no gloves or jacket and i didn't get as many as i usually would. it was like "don't hate me because i havn't got gloves on"

i always have long trousers of some description, but normally jeans, kevlar jeans for motorway, and my bike jacket. I've crashed in normal jeans and kevlar ones at about 30, kevlar ones i bruise but my skin fine and normaly ones i get a little bit of scratching and bruises, but jeans to give enough protection at low speed, crash damage is overrated.

I ride in nothing less than full leathers. I value my person far too much to piss around. I've seen 1st hand damage done at 20mph when a mate hit the gravel. He was wearing his lovely 501's and now won't go out in shorts. It's not big and it aint clever

I rode from North London to Camden in full leathers at the weekend. never again. I was sweating buckets and felt really ill when i went into shops. There was more chance of me fainting and crashing so I think unless I am doing serious distance and speed, I will be wearing jeans instead of me leather trousers.

Maybe i will just nod to everyone from now on. I just feel quite stupid when they don't nod back. Like when you wave at someone, they don't recognise you, so you try to pretend you were waving at someone else or fixing your hair. As a novice I will stick to my vertical "bump" nod. Perhaps there should be different nodding styles for different levels of experience, leading up to salutes using all four limbs combining a rolling read nod?? Shocked

Very Happy I ALWAYS nod, to whatever, on two wheels, (apart from harleys) they never nod me so...
apart from that, I dont care if its a scoot, a 125, a streetfighter, anything,

Mc Jamweasel and I were in the South of France in June, (St Tropez actually) Cool and I noticed on the continent they tend to wave with the left hand, not taking it off the bars, just a couple of fingers raised, probably something to do with driving on the wrong side of the road I guess. Question

But only bikes do it, scooters atc are seen as tools to get from A to B. bikes are for funnnnnn

There.
