Trying to decide on my next car, hoping to change pretty soon.

My thoughts keep getting drawn to the Impreza, I think it is simply the sound of its out of beat 4 Laughing

Car needs to have 3 proper seats in the back, able to be used as a proper family car, yet with a bit of poke for when I am in it myself.

Fuel economy not too important, with working away and another car in the household the mileage on this one would be limited(and replacing a 3.3L Petrol Voyager anyway).

Needs to have a decent boot for a double buggy.

Anyone lived with one of these? Sensible choice for a family car with a wicked streak?

Any other suggestions to consider?

I assume there are drawbacks to owning due to the number available relatively new with big savings over list price.

Mitsubishi Evo
BMW M3
Gold R32
Audi S4/RS4

I like Scooby's but they do have that chav look about them, but they are great cars.

My pick of the bunch would be an RS4, but they are not cheep!

I just sold a WRX - not the WRX STi, the plain WRX which before the 'newage' models used to be called a Turbo.

220bhp and you can use all of it. Cornering like its on rails, loads of grip although a little understeer on the limit.

Insurance is stupid money though, even for a non STi model, and I never got better than 23mpg out of it. Also a bit of a pain to drive sometimes. Light steering, light gearshift but over servoed brakes and a heavy clutch. The brakes had no feel and so it was rather hard to stop with finesse without using the ABS.

The ABS is rubbish and will release the brakes on both front wheels if one locks. The STi model has three way ABS, as opposed to the WRX's two. I suppose you have to get something for your money.

The STi is very garish, if I were you I'd look for a 2005, 2006 STi Spec D. The D standing for 'Discrete'. They look like a normal WRX but have the STi performance adornements like the different engine internals, 270bhp as standard (easily tuneable to 300bhp with a remap or PPP kit), water spray for the intercooler, better suspension and brakes. They have no teatray spoiler or gold wheels too.

Another downside... my WRX had a terrible turning circle. Absolutely awful and it was supposed to be the one you can live with compared to the Sti, so I guess that the STi models turning circle is aircraft carrier-esque - including the Spec D.

Don't get a Blue STi with gold wheels, because they are a crime against taste.

If I were you I'd buy a nice 3 or 5 series with a big engine. The Subaru is a good car for trackdays but even the plain WRX wasn't as good as my BMW for day to day stuff. And my BM is fifteen years old and has done 125k! Still, Subarus are good cars, and they are reliable, and they do go well.

I had a Jap Import WRX V-Limited, it was a peach of a car but very thirsty and too tempting to floor it and have fun. We used to get 250 miles out of a tank with the ex-missus driving it and she pootled everywhere, so expect mid 20s MPG at best.

The only problem we had with it was that the wiring for the fuel pump is under the rear seat and can fail, I ended up hard wiring it and it was fine. The fuel pumps are quite weak on the STI versions and there is a cheap upgrade available, do that and the injectors/map for a cheap power boost. Get on Scoobynet for (extremely biased) information and some cars for sale.

Cheers

Swear a few years back you was bigging up MR2's, then Impreza's and now Beemers.

That might be because I research my cars before I buy. The MR2, the Subaru and the Beemer are all good cars, and it is widely accepted that they are all good cars. If they were shit cars I wouldn't buy one. Simple as.

An MR2 is not practical in this situation being that it doesn't have rear seats, and the reason I sold the Subaru was down to fuel consumption.

And yes, I am going to reccomend cars I know and cars that I have owned because if nothing else, they meet my needs therefore I'll reccomend them.

I know i said i didn't like the MR2 but i actually miss mine a bit now, wish i still had it. Actually was a good little car. Embarassed If i bought another, would have to be the turbo.

Was thinking of buying a Scooby but insurance works out at £2000 which is ridiculous.

Get a WRX STi, I just have and its awesome...Dont know where you are getting these problems with the brakes from MarJay? the brembos on mine are awesome, the steering is direct like a go-kart, the clutch is a little heavy but easy to get used to.

It goes like a rocket and guzzles petrol but, well who cares. The STi has quite a stiff ride which makes for pretty damn good handling but does wear a little when you dont feel quite in the mood!

Oh and blue with gold wheels is the ONLY colour to go for Wink

I wouldn't describe it as a 'problem' with the brakes, but you also have to bear in mind that mine wasn't an STi, as I stated many times in my post.

They were just over servoed with no feel. They worked, and the ABS worked, but just not as well as an STi or other cars.

I paid 10k for mine, 03 plate, 44k miles, FSH, completely standard bar a K&N panel filter, 12mth warranty

Just had cam belt service, new brake pads, rear shocks - suspension is so stiff that a few years of bumpy shitty roads can cause damage, normally top mounts but also shocks/springs

I dont know how much difference there is between the two models im afraid. I have to admit i became a bit of a snob and wouldnt consider anything below the STi!! Wink

Oh insurance was 1k, 25yo, 5yrs NCB in a shitty area with no garage, no points or claims but importantly it seems no experience on other performance cars

Edit: Apparently the WRX's are 227hp, the STi is 265hp

The uk 300's are the same power as the STi but obviously there's not many of them about..

I had this problem on my Impreza Sport, if it was wet and I was using the brakes with any purpose such as coming to stop at a roundabout or junction and I went over a manhole cover the brakes would judder and the ABS would kick in and i'd have no brakes, had to release quickly as the ABS took ages to let them work again.

I'm going to do a Marjay and recommend cars I've owned. Laughing

an E39 540i touring ticks all the boxes. easily as fast as a Scooby in a straight line without looking a chav at the same time.

If you want to go for something a bit different look out for a Passat W8. Only 275 where ever sold in the UK, 4.0 W8 (the Veyron engine is basicaly 2 of these bolted together and turboed which is good for pub banter Laughing )

275bhp and 4WD it is basically an RS6 with a different engine and a Passat body thrown on top as it shares next to no chassis parts with a regular Passat.

Never been one for Beemers TBH, only one I have ever liked the look of is the 1 series.

Audis & Larger VW's may tick the right boxes for size and certainly have the comfort, bit unsure on the thrill factor being there.

The blue & gold wheel a bit too obvious for me, if I go for one I would prefer the black anyway.

So all in the comments seem to be a good car to drive although a bit heavy on the fuel & insurance? Both I can handle.

How about repair running costs?

The evo I would like, however cant see any deals that match those of the scooby , always just a bit more expensive on like for like year.

It does about 200 miles to a tank with a mix of gentle town driving, some blatting and a little motorway which is just about 20mpg.

As long as they are serviced they are meant to be pretty bulletproof, i have only had mine a few weeks so cant comment too much yet!

I looked at Evo's as well when i was looking and heard that they were a lot more expensive all round than the scoobies and not as reliable

EDIT: Impreza STi 0-60 in 4.9s..

If you were the first person to modify a legacy so you're not just another impreza driver then it might have some merit. However as you will join a long line of people who cant afford to buy and modify an Impreza then this plan would be rubbish
