Complete noob to bikes and forum btw.

In the near future i shall be passing my test and buying a bonny and trailer for uk touring, with laptop charging important and i may well go away in winter times during predicted good weather for a few days. Some of the trips will involve pillion passenger.

My ??? are.

Should i get:

A fly screen and or a windshield.

A no maintenance leisure batterry and an inverter.

A underengine protector.

I will have full uk breakdown cover and im yet to decide whether to get a netbook or 15 inch laptop.

I would be charging phone and maybe a friends laptop , but on trying to research power its very confusing what to get and how long it will last.

The trips will vary in lenght from days to a month and will be at camping barns somedays, which some have electrics and camping in a tent on other days with no electrics.

Im aware i can charge whilst on the move.

Im trying to ppppp.... prior planning prevents piss poor perfromance, but i dont want to carry stuff i dont need and not waste any money as the more i save the longer the trips.

The bonny 865cc will be around 3.5 grand and the trailer about 500 and ive set aside another 1000 for equipment, of which a lot will be brought from go outdoors and getgeared .co.uk.

Might add will be me and my dog and sometimes me and friend and his dog, both dogs meduim size.

So will be fully laden with fabric panniers daysacks tank bag and racks on trailer. !! Can the bonny handle that !!!! lol i hope so. I know trailer law btw.

Flyscreen or windshield is a good idea, which you get is your choice and depends on how much the wind bothers you.

Was thinking how effective a fly screen would be, whether it provides any wind protection and saves getting your dials really messy.

As i wont be buying a leky vest or leathers i thought one might be needed. I would be making regular stops anyway and have speed restrictions with carrrying weight and towing....

maybe just use one if it comes with the bike....

An inverter would draw a huge amount of power.

Most computers of that type run on DC power anyway with an internal transformer. I'd look for one that will run on 12V D.C. directly.

Fly screens, even small ones, help reduce fatigue over long distances in my experience.

Would an iPhone or similar blackberry/PDA device not do everything you would require while touring on a motorbike? Including web access, photo storage, telephone and GPS.

How long are you intending on running this stuff for, each time?

Personally, I'd just charge it whilst riding (via a fag socket) and when the laptop battery runs out, that's it until the next charge.

If the need to run pokerstars each night is so pressing, I'd just make sure I stayed somewhere with mains power. Or take a generator with me.

I can play stars whenever i want, but the netbook/laptop will be used at home 2 for bedroom and garden.

I plan on charging on the move as much as possible, although the sinewave invertor ive been told i need compared to standard ones, but i dont beleive this as of yet and im trying not to use/buy the expensive inverter.

I thought the laptops powersupply would help with the cureent and any problems there in, ie it will or wont work but wont blow..

I shall also on buying the laptop / netbook choose the upgrade on the battery and buy another battery is a possibilty, especially if i choose to get a laptop.

I thought i will buy the 20 pound invertor one and test at home, as it will work for phone etc. That talleid with charging on the move and then i can get these expensive inverter and leisure battery ideas out me head !

right spent hours searching reading forum,

now its simply can someone confirm whether my intended bike is up to the job of uk touring with 30 stone of bloke on it and 150 kg of trailer inc 2 meduim dogs, aswell as panniers etc....

note it would not be the lenght and time in the saddle that you would consider touring, many breaks from minutes to days..

must stress that it would be going slow on a and b roads for 200 miles max then ditching kit and having fun for a day or 3., then off again ..

also would be prepared to reinforce or watever you do to the standard suspension. average speed about 40 - 60, and if i have to ditch the mate and his dog then so be it. As i can just visit him in cornwall more...

It would be easier if you ditched the friend and his dog I imagine.

A new rider is going to struggle with a bike, a pillion, 2 dogs, a trailer and some panniers etc. You need to think how a bike will handle with all that.

Best setup for carrying alot of kit would be a sidecar out fit, stick the dog in the side car and you and your mate on the bike.


Urals are ready to go, not very fast only about 60mph max but they can carry big loads and the boxer style engine has alot of tourqe.


There few posts on ADV rider and the HUBB of thoses who have traveled with a dog and sidecar.

yeah,

hes a good friend and we would have a good laugh, and the tours supposed to be his payment for work as it were...

i could source a lighter trailer , but im unsure about suitability in using one light one, and pack light is an option.

if i can find a overall weight thats pretty much the max then i can work everything around that ??

could buy small cheap camper and get bike later... NO NO NO !

could buy bigger bike, but i want to do whats best as its months away, and even then theres winter to consider. Also want to buy clever and tour clever and make money last/save some.

but those camping barns are great and cost about 7 quid, and i just refuse to use campsites that charge similiar, unless festival type situation, thats partly why i need a laptop to so we can find good illegal short term camping via google earth.

so nothings set in stone , thats why im here i suppose, not just for preparing for the tour but to learn abouts bikes and gain great advice

I've ridden a Bonny and I think it would struggle to carry two people without getting a bit breathless, let alone all the stuff you're wanting to cart around with you.

To be humphing all that stuff around with you, I'd be looking at a Goldwing. And that's hardly a good choice for a new rider (though probably better than a seriously overloaded Bonny with a trailer).

If you seriously have to take a mate and two dogs, look at something with four wheels. Buy a transit van and lob a bike in the back so you can go out and have fun.

I just don't get this at all.

Why do you need to go by bike?

A car is so much more suitable for your needs, any bike laden down with all that stuff is going to be slow, and handle poorly. You will have all of the disadvantages of a bike with virtually none of the the good points.

Why by bike? Why? This is going to cost a hell of a lot of money and still be rubbish. You could spend half on a decent car and be totally sorted, then buy a bike with the rest so you can enjoy it without tons of stuff on it.

Based on this, and the rest of the evidence in your posts, I conclude that you are mentally disadvantaged.

source a lightweight trailer, lightweight tent. what about those bicycle trailers . ?? one netbook between us no invertor or leisure batterry, no cooker bar a grill and matches etc,

minimal clothes, one pair of boots each.

chop a leg of each dog and go on a diet myself.

easy detachable sidecar....

could consider small van and 125 cc for a year for ncb.......

is there not a weight i can feasibly use to work to with a 2007 bonny and light trailer....

suppose it might sound like a wideup lol

my options are open so .... your guidance and expertise is appreciated and would be used in the decision..

Most of the point of the trip is walking the dogs over peaks district / windermere

and now that place with all the pubs in wales...

stil can t see why the bike wont do it at small distances with low speeds on b ans a roads.

especially if we go as light as we can and stiffin suspension...

Just buy a car, really, it is the obvious option.

I love motorcycling, but this won't be fun at all. It will be expensive, a massive hassle and probably scary.

It's just a bad idea overall.
