Eating offal - vegetarians look away

I brought a can of oxtail soup for my lunch today - but it is Tesco's own rather than my usual Heinz.

I was all looking forward to it, until I inadvertently saw the ingredients. number 4 on the list = Beef Heart.



Now I'm sure Heinz don't put this in their version. And it's totally spoilt my lunch plans. I just can't bring myself to eat it.

Am I being a fussy sod? I have an aversion to offal in general, but the idea that parts of a cow's ticker are floating around in my soup makes me proper retch.

Any fans of devilled kidneys and sweetbreads on BCF?

Not a fan of offal, no problems with it just don't like kidney. liver etc. Mind you I love haggis and black pudding.

Haggis Ingredients:


1 sheep's stomach bag
1 sheep's pluck - liver, lungs and heart
3 onions
250g beef Suet
150g oatmeal
salt and black pepper
a pinch of cayenne
150mls of stock/gravy

I won't touch liver, kidney, or heart of any form, tastes horrible to me.

However I will eat "meat" from most animals.

If you don't like offal, what the flying fuck are you doing buying oxtail soup? Given how it is made almost entirely of offal. The clue is in the name.

Yes you are being entirely too fussy, the heart is made entirely of muscle, just like any other bit of meat you eat off a cow.

I often use ox heart to make a lovely rich beef stock for French Onion soup or real gravy.

If it had said "beef stock" on the ingredients rather than ox heart, you wouldn't have batted an eyelid.

I don't eat liver but that's just because I don't like the taste.

Question is if you ate it and did not know it contained offal what would you do?.

Its like people who refuse to eat non branded stuff and it gets swapped for something else.

I am in Mongolia and offal , mostly mutton has been in everything , you can sometimes see heart valves and arteries in stuff..

I have two small points to make.


a) Please dont be so fussy, at the very least, do NOT let your kids go without forcing them to eat stuff like that. I hate my parents for NOT (I repeat, En Oh Tee) making me eat stuff when I was younger. Im a picky twat with my food and it annoys me.

b) For the love of the english language, please, Mudskipper, tell me you brought that can in from your cupboards at home

I was in poland and had a soup and ok it was chewy but the soup itself was so good and in an odd way i enjoyed its taste and texture.

I asked my friend what it was? I guessed squid? some kind of pasta thing i've not come across?

It was Tripe.

Really enjoyed it in a soup not sure about on its own but the soup is aparently full of Iron and poles swear by it for losing hangovers and have to say i felt better right away after it,vodka hangover eased.

I'm with Tonka on this one,i also like liver preferably with onions.Dont know why people moan about offal,when they gladly eat burgers and sausages which we all know are full of eyes,ears and arseholes, .

Heart is meaty meat too. You'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between cardiac muscle and skeletal muscle without the aid of a microscope (cardiac muscle fibres branch into a Y-shape and crosslink with one another).

when i lived at home my parents only ate english food

so when i moved in with my missus i was a right pain to feed

now i eat nearly anything except egg and sausage as they make me ill

When I go to my parents place in spain the local traditional eatery does amazing garlic rabbit.

They litterally stick the rabbit in the pot in quarters so each person gets quarter of the rabbit, literally everything, bones, meat, organs etc etc.

It's yummy!

Speaking as one of the so called squeamish carrot munchers, yes your is a pussy.
It is just meat, you eat meat you can eat heart. I will quite happily rip squirrels to bits and feed them to my ferret, hearts are just muscle. In the days that I did eat meat I used to eat a lot of poached birds. I would crop and gut pigeons and always eat the heart raw.

Heart is the nicest... my brother and me used to fight over any heart available (one cuts, the other chooses) - oh the joy when the chicken had 2 hearts in the gibs!

I will also eat pretty much all other offal (especially liver), but the point is that heart is the best!
