My girlfriend wants to buy a puppy but we both work full time so during the day it would be with a dog day care person.

So for at least 9/10 hours monday to friday it would be with one person and the rest of the time would be with us.

Some people say this is cruel as the dog would not be getting the attention of one person all the time but other people say this is perfectly ok.

Anyone else think this is cruel or harmful to the animal?

The animal would probably be ok, but I'd be more worried that you couldn't assert yourself as the alpha of the pack and it would just run rings around you.

Yep. With me being in work all day when mine was a pup the Mrs became her master as she was home with her all day. Rolling Eyes She pays a lot more attention to the Mrs than me. But at least she isn't thinking a third party is it's pack leader.

She wants to buy a Miniature schnauzer puppy. She plans to take 2 weeks off work to look after it when she first gets it but from then on it will be taken care of during the day by a third party.

I'm actually at home during the day at the moment as I'm between jobs but cant guarantee how long I will be at home for- could be in full time work at any time soon.

They look like this:

Problem is you will be expected to look after the fucking thing, take it for walks, pick up its poo, bear its stench and fucking yapping.

It will cost you, financially and emotionally. If you don't want a dog in the house then now is the time to say it.

Get a CAT. They are easy to look after, and much cuter when young.

Fucking dogs, ridiculous pets.

This was a concern of mine, but she has agreed to look after it and pick up its shit etc, as it will be her reposnsibility as I'm not that fussed about having one.

I'm hoping it wont bark continuosly as that would drive me mad, especially if I'm trying to sleep Mad

But arent cats a bit pointless as in they dont actually do anything much?

having someone to look after the dog is better than the thousands left at home..

do you have a garden...

steve

Yes we do have a garden,

but the dog would be dropped off in the morning to the day care person and collected after work so it wouldnt be in our garden all day,

but the third party would be walking the dog etc during the day.

I've decided i'm never ever going to own a dog.

My parents thought it would be a good idea to get a German Shepherd puppy...AS A FIRST DOG! Well this has put me off for life. Attention seeking, annoying piece of shit. It is cute for about 2 minutes a day and only because it wants something.

Yeah she will walk the dog for abut 3 days and then she'll get fed up of picking up shit and having a big responsibility. My dad has said that owning a puppy is about 10 times worse than having a baby.

I'm sure it will be rewarding in time, but my gosh why would anyone want something so attention seeking. You get a cat, kick it out the door and it'll be happy, you can then stroke it for a while on your lap when you want on your terms, but dogs just aren't like that, it is a constant power struggle when they are puppies. I get woken up at 8am every morning by it's incessant barking, which will be fine when I have to go to work, but I guess I can kiss goodbye to a lie in at weekends.

I wanted to move out of my parents house in the near future, now it is a matter of urgency.

Yeah I did used to agree that feathered birds were rubbish pets, and the ones which are solely kept in their cages are, IMO, but a lot of owners do have them out and about in the hoose, so I moderated my views.

I've aired my comments about dogs many, many times, no need to do it again. EDIT (Jon B seems to have done rather well)

What I would pass comment on is the cost of this little escapade. How much does 5 day a week care for your girlfriend's bundle of joy cost?

And, although she states she will pay for it, who would she turn to first for cash if she's a little short?

The whole thing sounds like a very, very silly plan. Only a women could think it up.

You do realise that women only want puppies when they are actually really broody.

The next thing you know she'll be eight months gone...

Well I think she wants a puppy as a subsitute for a child as I don't intend having a child any time soon (or possibly ever),

besides this the girlfriend pays for most of our £1500 per month mortgage and earns 4 times what I earn so no way is she gonna be able to leave work.
