Swap bikes? Questions about P/X

Ok, first the machines...

Mine
2001 black Kawasaki ZX7R
16K on clock
No full service history as i do a lot myself
New tyres
Scorpion System
Braided lines
new front pads
Under tray
2mths MOT
no tax

Bad points, cracked fairing front right side near indicator. Also scuffed from a drop.
There are a few minor ones on the fairings

His
Suzuki 1998 black TLR
30k on clock
full service history
extra end cans
full set of race fairings
12mths MOT
2 mths TAX
K&N, air filter mod
Proffesional respray in all black (not due to a drop)

The guy desperatly wants an inline 4 again, he is interested in mine. He had mentioned straight swap.
Is this just silly, as the TLR has 30k on the clock and is 3 years younger. Its not the performance im looking at, as i just want an affordable twin. I feel my Ninja is sweet but that personal maybe as it looks and sounds bloody wicked, id hate to see her go but this TLR looks the nuts.

You are more likely to find things going wrong on the older bike with higher mileage but that isn't guaranteed. I'd be curious as to why he has a full set of race fairings (lots of track time?) but any jap bike should be capable of higher mileage than 30k without any serious problems.

If you like it and feel good about it then go for it. You'd be lucky to get more than £2k for the 7R anyway and the TL is probably worth £1500. Sell the cans to make up the difference, and the fairing if you're not going to use it, and you're almost there.

Hi

Slight paranoia, but TL gearboxes are not that tough. Ste had one on which the gearbox went pop at 20k, and it wasn't that unusual.

its a modern classic. i'd say a full strip down look over gearbox etc good service and it will be ready for more miles on it just depends on it you can be with out it on road for abit or even if you could be bothered

The trouble with swapping bikes/vehicles is the swaps only work because each party thinks they're mugging the other one off.

If party A could sell their bike for cash, they would, because cash gives infinite choice. And a swap limits you to finding someone with something suitable that wants what you're offering, which is difficult.

I've tried for a swap several times, just because I can't be arsed with the faff of selling (it's not always a con I suppose). But once I got messed around, and once it worked nicely.

30k is quite a few miles, whereas 16k is naff all miles. But then balance tatty bodywork against professionally resprayed bodywork.

I'd say it's a fairly even swap, but swaps are just always fraught with danger, you have no way to bargain if something isn't right.

And changing a gearbox is a REAL pain in the arse.

I agree with MarJay! Kenny has clearly never done a gearbox rebuild on a modern sportbike!

All mecahnical issues aside i decided not to go for it, as id put a fair few miles on the thing and then i doubt anyone would want it afterwards, where as mine is pretty low mileage.
Thanks for all the input guys, if anyone is interested in my ZX7R im looking for £1800.
