scotland in 2 weeks (just bought panniers and had new rear pads, on way home), i feel like a cunt.

Was behind slow moving traffic in town, began my manuvere to move into the right hand lane (one way, three lanes) and during my manuevre things changed, cars in front stopped sooner than I had predicted and I hit the rear right corner of a 4x4 at about 5mph.

credit to the bloke he was a nice guy, 4x4 was unscathed. Thumbs Up

Im gutted.

Damage seems to be restricted to headlight and headlight fairing which I predict will be £400 for the two bits, was my birthday yesterday too...

Hardly, Ebay is your friend.

Headlight.

Fairing. Not the same colours but an example.

Nekkid all the way... Cool

Seriously, at least you are okay, and the damage is cosmetic. Such an accident will only make you a little more observant in the future, ie. looking a little further ahead, ensuring you know what's going on well before it happens.

got a quote of ~£1600* to repair it all in (light, fairing, fender, indicators, air ducts etc.)

*Crazy money

insurance are assessing it at the moment, I have a feeling it is approaching write-off territory, anyone withh more knowledge got any ideas? If this was the case, what would be my best course of action? can I buy it back? how much would it likely cost?

Thanks.

Drill some holes and cable tie the bit of panel back on. You only need a headlight for your trip then. Focus on getting it fully repaired when you get back.

Am in disbelief that you told your insurance to take a look. That is just plain silly. Bought the parts off ebay, maybe yes, £400 tops and post up a HELP topic and someone off BCF could have assisted.

Anyways.....Nice looking panniers, what make are they?

I am on the side of give it a go yourself

Bikes are surprisingly easy to work on
A haynes manual and a cheapo tool kit and away you go

Plastics are just like Lego, take your time, and if you start to get pissed off with it just tools down, lock shed up and leave it for the day.

Too get it road worthy you could just take teh fairing off, stick any old headlight on there and have your trip, then like has been said sort it when you get back

S**t happens to everyone, it is how you deal with it
£1600 is rediculous for what the damage is
Mine didnt cost that and mine cartwheeled through a Donington Park gravel trap at 90mph

Remember if you go through insurance it will hike your prices for a few years. I repaired mine myself, what the insurance dont know wont hurt them. 2 years NCB and counting... \o/

I entertained the idea of doing it myself over the remainder of the weekend, had a look at ebay and have yet to see the parts I need. I did see full 3rd party fairing kits for £425 on one website (painted and decalled) but the delivery time was 21days.

The haynes manual I have suggests it would be relatively straight forward. My local dealer looked over the bike and assessed it for me (for free) before I notified my insurers, once I found out the price of replacement (new) parts, knowing I hadn't seen a welath of available second hand parts on ebay, I thought fuck it.

Some prospective quotes on premiums for next year suggest it won't be a lot different to what I was offered 6months ago.

Givi sport ones, I had just bought them at the dealers and was on my way home (£80, got them for £75), have only just looked at them closely yesterday lol.

Interestingly the headlight is being sold by a seller i had saved and did not see it within the list of items.

Also I have seen those nosecones, but my bike isn't blue and I'm not prepared to mix-and-match.

Once you factor in the bidding and postage times, it still doesn't save much time (even if I won the auction).

I do, all the internal fixings have sheared off, and there is nothing to fix the headlight mounts to.

I appreciate that DIY'ing it would be far cheaper than getting it done by a dealer using genuine parts., but I've weighed up my options, had I not been imminently due to go away, I'd have sat the bike at home and taken my time over it.

My insurers have given 2 working days for their engineers to look over the information submitted to them. It can go one of three ways, they authorise repairs, they send out an engineer to look in person, or they write it off.

My dealer made an effort to assess the bike sooner than I had it booked in for and are endeavouring to undertake any repairs before I am due to leave providing authotisation to repair it is recieved.

I'm just waiting for the decision of the insurers.

I'm still interested if anyone can shed any light on the outcomes if the bike is written off etc?

Is it worth fcuking your NCB over it?

Repair it as cheap as you can and do the trip. Repair it properly when you get back. Thumbs Up

I doubt they'll write it off over a headlight & nose cone.

I feel slightly let down by you. I know I don't know you but you are cancelling a trip because of a bit of cosmetic damage?

Just get a headlight sorted asap off ebay, then when you get back spend some time looking for the right colour scheme nose cone etc.
