can not get neutral

Hi to everyone.

My son recently purchased a 2004 honda cbr125
when the engine is running he is unable to engage neutral, if he switches the engine off he can find neutral no problem.
can anyone tell me what the problem is likely to be and if possible how to resolve it?. Many thanks

Sounds like a clutch problem to me.

If it's on a cable then just tighten it up a little or if it won't tighten, replace the cable.

If it's hydraulic, drop the fluid out and replace it.

Mind you, on my Triumph and 1000RX I often struggle to find neutral unless I'm still rolling or I stop the engine. Then again sometimes they're fine and slip into neutral no problems at all.

Check the chain tension, an over tight or loose chain can cause neutral problems. If the chain is right, tell him to blip the throttle and it may go in.

CBR125's are a pain in the arse for this.

Make sure the left side footpeg is tightly bolted on, make sure there is no freeplay in gear lever (well only a very small amount)
Chain tension is correct
Oil level correct, have you changed the oil recently? It makes a big difference to how smooth the gearbox is.
Clutch cable tension. The clutch level should have 1-2mm of freeplay before it engages anything, then it should require effort to pull all the way back to the bar.
