GSXR SRAD - Problem

Hello to all, brand new to the forum looking for a bit of advice.

Started the bike this morning (97 GSXR600 SRAD) and when i put it into gear there was an audible bang and the engine died. When i tried to start it up again the relay was clicking, but i was not getting any juice. I am assuming it is a fuse (never had a chance to check, had to hurry to work) but i am wondering if any other person has had a similar thing happen (the bang ) and found it to be something more sinister......... It was running and you hear a bang and it stops!! Not sounding good!! As for the started not turning the motor over...Really not sounding good!

If the bang was just a back fire maybe not so bad but if it was a mechanical BANG then best to check nothing mechanical has gone a miss!
At least see if the engine will turn over by hand gently just to make sure nothing has gone amiss in the engine. If your lazy try putting it in second gear and see if the bike will gently turn the engine over.as you push it....Just to make sure nothing silly has happened like cam chain snapping etc.

If no problem turning the engine over both ways then yup chech the usual suspects!!!

Might also be a short somwhere. Disconnect the battery then check for continuity between the positive lead and the frame. Check the wires from the battery for any fraying or burns.

I agree with bladerunner on what he has said

Have you checked your oil.

Have you tryed to starting it out of gear because it just might be that your clutch plates are sticking and causing alot of drag on the starter motor when you try and turn the engine over in gear with the clutch pulled in.

As for the starter motor relay clicking it might be that you have a bad earth or starter motor solenoid has gone or in worst cas scenario you engine has seized up or something drastic has locked up , so do what bladerunner sais buy trying to turn the engine over but if you can take your rocker cover off to see that you cam is moving to make sure it is not the cam chian that has snapped.

Cheers for the input,

I removed the clutch basket, visually inspected all parts, verniered the plate thickness' etc - all brand new. Turned the engine by hand (pinion in the gear case) no grinding etc, felt very smooth. Opened the clutch actuator side. The return spring had snapped - hence the bang - and the area was full of crud (see pic). Cleaned it all out and ordered new bits. Hopefully this will get me out behaving like a juvenile again!!!!!

Glad to hear it is ok , so it is not an expensive problem at the end of the day , just a small question did it go bang when you had your clutch pulled in ?

hate to say it, but i really doubt thats what made the bang.

my SRAD was notorious for randomly hydraulic locking if it was left for a while, but it only happened every 1 in 100 times. maybe thats the case?
