How long does it take to get to Italy?!

A few of us are planning a trip to Italy and I was wondering how long it would take us?

The plan is to get to Ancona as quickly as we can - we have allocated 2 days to get from Calais to Ancona but then take our time back. Can anyone tell me how long this might realistically take?

1.5 - 2 days max, if you take your time.

Can stop just before/after the alps to sleep if you set off early in the morning.

I'd disagree with that, 1.5 - 2 days is in no way taking your time. It's nearly 1000 miles and that's just from Calais so not including any riding time from where you live and the ferry. 500 miles a day is tough going on a bike and yes you could do it but it depends if you're really up for it, as one day is fine but 2 days in a row is gonna leave you fairly wasted on the third.

The quickest way is just to follow the motorway/autobahn down obviously, soon as you start hitting country or mountain roads you're losing loads of time. Personally I find I make much better progress using the French motorways than the autobahn, they're a lot more direct from point to point, driving is less dangerous and services are cheaper and better, just have to pay the tolls is the downside.

you pay at every toll, watch out though as the police do check to see how long it took you to travel between tolls so a 10 min rest on each is advised if your going to speed.

Indeed, some people are happy to do it other (and I'd say the majority) aren't, 500 miles of motorways a day is a slog, and yes i'm quite capable of doing it and have done but I certainly wouldn't describe it as fun and wouldn't consider 500miles a day "taking your time" as the first reply suggested.

I regard 300 miles as the max a day for a holiday. I have tried more and it stops being fun.
Motorways are very boring. the longer you travel the more stops you will end up taking. 2 hours between stops buut as the day progresses you will end up desperate after 3/4 hour.
My previous trips I aimed for a max of 350 miles a day this year I am doing mostly under 200 a day with one day doing 310.
Hope this is more relaxing with stops for sightseeing. breakfast and lunch.

You can do alot more than 300 if your just on a motorway day. I rode up from Nice to Orleans last year in a day (via Millua bridge) about 700 miles in about 11 hours. It does get boring though, I found I would ride hard for an hour at about 100mph, then have a break/fuel/fag, and just break it up into small chunks - helps avoid getting done for speeding between tolls as well. Having an MP3 helps as well.

There easy enough to take off and hide if you get stopped, I didn't really see any police in france, although I've heard they have started to clamp down on speed alot now. I've got my music going through an autocom now, and I generally have my ipod shuffle under the seat so its not obvious.
