Were moving house tommorow and will be a 30 min walk to Joshua's school.
Due to work starting just after school Im going to need to take him pillion.
Its only 3 miles up the road but something im quite worried about.
Who pillions children?
He is 5
He needs helmet, gloves, jacket - what about those love handles? any good?
Just need some advice. He is a tall lad and will reach the pegs no problem.
Cheers
Louise

The guys I ride out with have kids come along as pillions sometimes and the little ones always use the 'love handles'. They are a bit older than your Josh, but I still reckon that they seem to be the best bet.

Take care!

Its a personal thing, only you can answer it.

I taken all of my kids on the back of my bike and I've ridden 200 miles with a 8 months pregnant woman. It never bothers me since I don't go out with a plan to crash.

Others will tut and shake their head but f**k 'em, you do what feels right.

I'd definitely get some of those love handles. When doing them up put the buckle behind you so that if the buckle fails then it won't come flying off. Thumbs Up

Personally I dont think children should be pillions especially as young as five because they are a tiny bundle in the event of a spill that will be harder to see on the road, Im sure Im on my own on this but children cant decide for themselves whether to be pillion its up to the parent, I am talking from experience because once I was going around a round-a-bout and I had my young son pillion, the back slid out then gripped causing us both to be high sided, I have never got over what may have happened if it had been busier and still get shivers when I think about it, just my opinion

I have taken my 5 year old cousin on the back of my bike round a car park and he seemed fine. If I had proper gear for him I would happily take him further. If it is only 3 miles then I imagine he won't have a problem.

I somewhat agree.
I wouldnt take him other wise.
But would mean I couldnt work. Im due to speak to my boss soon to see if they can try to work around me.
I know my mum could take him but where she is overweight and has problems with ehr knees it would take her at least an hour each way.
Something I dont really want to do.
He has been on the back around the carpark last year and he seemed fine.
Wouldnt be going any more then 30mph but I know what could happen and its something I dont want to think about.
I certainly dont want to move schools as he loves his place at the moment.

Neutral

Your riding style will adapt accordingly.
You'll ride slower, much more defensively and with eyes like a hawk. It's not like you're going for a 100 mile Sunday scratch...

...And he will be the coolest kid at school Thumbs Up

Will his feet be able to touch the pillion pegs? I think that is a legal requirement to take a child on the bike.

I don't know your son so can't make a judgement but I have a five year old myself and I know she is simply not ready to travel on my bike. We've done laps of the garden on a C90 no problem and she loves it, but out on the road I don't think that a five year old is sufficiently capable of appreciating the level of self-responsibily necessary as a pillion passenger and the dangers posed if they don't follow your instructions to the letter.

Personally I would leave it for another two or three years. Others may disagree with my assessment.

i have only had a learner legal bike for a month.

But to be fair i don't think it sounds like a good idea, kids at 5 don't always have the safety conciousness as we do.

If he wants to scartch his arm or something silly like that, while you go over a bump, then he could tumble.

It's not worth the risk is it.

30 minute walk? There is your answer. He can walk, this has the added bonus of him not becoming a fat git.
Oh no I have suddenly remembered. Nobody walks to school anymore there are too many paedos on the streets.
Gosh it is so difficult being a parent. Karma

I pick my 5 year old up from school every friday on the bike. Its then a 60 mile trip home round the m25 and up the m1. Yes that through all the roadworks. He loves being on the bike. I have all the gear for him, I use the love handles and they work great, plus I also have a top box for him to lean against and specially made footpegs that mount up higher so he can sit properly on the rear seat. This is for my versys.

I also take him out on my 10r as well but he wedges in the seat with me for that one. He prefers the 10r but likes the versys as its comfy.

Just bought a rider to passenger intercom and its superb we can just chat away while filtering.

Get alot of strange looks but most ppl usually give the thumbs up.

I reckon we have done over a 1000 miles now on the versys and he is aware of what he should and shouldnt do.

Then again my son is petrol head and was riding his LT50 quad at 3 years old. He is great at the driving games on the xbox as well.

Yes and has done for over a year

If I didnt have to work I would walk. Always do but because work is an early start 3 days a week I cant get him to breakfast club because that starts at 8 and I work from 8am.
This is why im hoping my boss agrees to an 8:30 start so I have time to drop him off for 8am.

If I really had the choise I wouldnt take him on the back. But work is work and I do like to earn an honest wage for a single mum and this is the only option I can think off really.
Unless I dont work and go back onto the dole which is something I dont want to do.

Right, 3 bedroom property.....yep I can see how that is necessary.
I think you need to sell the bike and buy a nice safe and cosy 4x4. Karma

While its not a route I would go down from the first conversation it may be worth reading up on your rights as a parent.

I've been to Lous flat and its fuckin tiny, they definetly needed the extra space, and for what it's worth, Lou had no say or decision in the move, as far as I know her parents literally said last week that "in a week we're moving"..

Altho I do agree maybe it's time to look into car lessons.

I am a single parent that gets 'some' help from my parents.
Seriously, Im trying to find a solution to this.
If I dont work and scrounge of the dole I bet you would still have a moan.
At least Im out there working an honest wage when most young/single mums dont work.
I just cant win with some people.
