CB exhausts stubbying

Hi all, as some of you may know i am currently rebuilding my 1980 CB. (dont worry, i will get a write up going fairly soon) I came to take my exhausts off and on closer inspection I found that they are rusted through at the tips and will need replacing.

I had a brain wave, could i stubby them or will this kill millions of kittens worldwide and blow up the bike in the process?

Not too sure on the kitten question, or on the blowing up part. It's not a 2stroke engine is it? I know the 2 strokes need the exhaust to be a correct length.

At that age it won't have any emission control, so no worries there. Just chop off the worst bit and see what happens. It isn't exactly a high performance engine, so nothing you do to the exhaust will upset the fuelling that much. If it all goes pants, just get another exhaust to replace the cut one. After all, if you don't chop it it will fall apart anyway if it's rusted as bad as you say. Best cut it a bit at a time until you get the look/sound you want.

Kool cheers for the comments guys. It isnt a two stroke rich.

Can anyone second zzr souls? Im gonna have a go anyway and if worst comes to the worst then ill have to get a new exhaust (which i will anyway). I'm just worried about harming the engine.

yeah i'd just lop it off with a hacksaw, then clean it up afterwards and fit the endcap back on to make it look pretty.
shouldnt think it would affect the engine.
then if you dont like it just buy a new exhaust.

bearing in mind it is a cone, how do you propose to seal off the back end? Or do you intend just to chop it and make a megaphone!?!? ... that certainly won't make the neighbours or MOT man happy!! Wink

the plan was not to seal up the end and run it so its extra loud. The exhausts as they are will be fine for MOT but not much good for anything else.
