2 different cars for 2 different purposes..

what do you need the car for might give us an idea of what to suggest.

I like BMW's but I'd buy the focus. The 316 will be so slow as to be nigh on undriveable.

A better choice would be a 318i...

Yeah I'd agree. The bigger engine bimmer's are good, the 6 pot's the one to have if anything - but the 316 is going to suck, whereas the focus will be lively and good to drive.

Test drove a 316i few months ago and it was so slow i almost couldn't believe it.I also found as i have large feet there was a foot rest wedge from what i remember and i felt i almost had to drive with my left foot at a diagonal angle and it was awkward.

It had no feeling of prestige whatsoever , the 318i i drove right after and yes much better so i think it needs to be that or get a Focus or something else if you can.

My old Civic might be nothing too special but i felt like apologising to it for nearly swapping it for a 316i nowhere near the fun plus theres insurance and fuel consumption issues if its not for company use or whatever.

The beemer is so slow it's untrue. The Focus is the better car.

We don't even know what focus he is on about. Could be a 1.4 petrol for all we know. Laughing

Maybe but I would rather have the BMW any day than a Corsa build quality, looks and almost everything else vastly superior.

As for the Focus vs 316 the Focus as even with its smallest engine it will be on par with the Beemer. Built to last but pay the price in the weight.

Definately focus.

Marje, who needs to go and cry after recommending FWD, just recommended FWD over RWD.

This shows how shit a 316i is.

It was a wrench, but I manned up and did it... Crying or Very sad However, my 325i is so much fun that I could become a BMW enthusiast. That never really happened with the Subaru... That proves (to me at least) that the RWD thing isn't just me getting obsessional. It does make a genuine difference.

Me too. The beemer is just too heavy for the 1.6i engine. Smile

I've quite enjoyed some little hatches due to their 'ragability'; similar for my laguna, which while it had low-limits, it could be kept there.
As far as speed goes, a 318 matched my laguna off the lights. While that's disappointing for 'a BMW', I'd probably be fine with it for driving fun in a cheap car.
Had a little drive in my bigger 3 series yesterday and was reminded that it can be pretty damn quick if needed. Still not sure whether I consider it a good thing or not, but I do like the (in nice open spaces) sideways action.

the cars just to have some fun in and also take me about!

focus would be a 1.6 or 1.8 zetec so pretty much same engine size as the bmw.

have been looking at some of the e36 and e46 318i's and they look pretty good.

Thumbs Up

In that case get the Focus, my mate had a 318i and even that was as slow as a snail with a nail through it.

The 1.8 Focus Zetec is actually quite quick.

Cheers

Sorry to be boring, but what are the finances for each.

I'm thinking initial cost, insurance, consumables (tyres & exhaust being the 2 biggies), servicing (when is the expensive belt change due). I'm sure you can think of other costs.

Obviously, if money is no object then get which one actually feels the best to drive for you.
