Netbooks are for more basic use really so sounds ok for you.

most new netbooks are installed with Windows xp only
don't expect a cd/dvd drive

and the specs won't be amazing, so once you start filling it up you'll notice it'll become a lightweight piece of crap Cool

I use a laptop 99% of the time, but will still be getting a netbook shortly for travelling with. I like the idea of something that can just be thrown in a bag without it adding much more weight - my laptop and power brick weigh 10lbs, whereas the netbook I have my eye on only weighs 3lbs with adaptor.

If you're just going to be doing email, browsing and some document production, a netbook will be fine, although the screen resolution is usually something crap like 1024x600. They are lighter and cheaper than laptops, and tend to have a better battery life. The downsides are that they usually don't have the storage capacity of laptops.

What's your definition of "general use"?

Try and go somewhere where you can type on one for a bit.

I like the EEEPC quite a lot but I can't type on it comfortably at all.

Samsung NC10 is my current favourite and has a great keyboard but it's just too expensive to justify it.
