Right, this might be a bit of a hazy explanation as I'm pushed for time.
In 40 mins I'm going to a funeral for a woman who has lived two doors down from me for my whole life except the last 2 months.
I have said hello to her when she's been out of the house (not often) in that time, and I know her kids and grandkids, who all live in the village, but I don't really know any of them that well. I want to go and pay respects though.
However I think I might feel a bit uneasy when I get there, for the simple reason that a few years ago my mate died, and at his funeral there werew a bunch of kids who didn't know him at all but went anyways, probably to get a day off school or whatever, and I just don't want to be that guy. I've lived in the village all my life and know these people, it just feels a bit odd that I probably spoke to her about 3 times in the last few years. ____________________ Don't practice it until you get it right, practice it until you don't get it wrong.

Funerals are for the benefit of the living.
It's a chance for closure (horrible Americanism) and, as you said, to pay respect.
So IMO go to the funeral. Shake hands with relatives etc. on the way out. You don't have to go to any wake if you don't want to and don't know anyone there. ____________________ ...and the whirlwind is in the thorn trees, it's hard for thee to kick against the pricks...

The things, people will do for a ham butty...
Nowt wrong with paying your respects. It not as of your going to be wailing in the corner screaming "why, why, why?" |

Bet it wasn't too bad was it? Well apart from the dead person.
I'd only met John Peel once but felt compelled to goto his funeral service. Can't imagine doing that for anyone else.

Well I went to the funeral, turns out I wasn't nearly the most remote person from her there, everyone seemed pleased to see me and I felt comfortable.
