Looking for small 4 stroke greenlaner >?1000 in Cambs

As per the title something 250-400cc I guess, new to trail bikes so not really sure what models I'm looking at. As I understand it, common options are:-

Honda:-
XR250
XLR250
XR400

Suzuki:-
DR350

Kawasaki:-
KLR250
KLX250

Yamaha:-
XT225/250
TTR250

Of those, which are the best options and what else is there that is very usable on road and suitable for an offroad newbie? I'll be wanting to commute through winter on it but happy to putter along at 65!

There is a KLR650 going for £800 but that doesn't meet the smaller bit Laughing

It's a bit far away (I'm in Cambridgeshire) and definitely over budget. I'm really wanting something quite tatty, closer to 500 would be better than closer to 1000! Quite like the Serows but maybe a bit slow possibly? He has some for around a grand, the only thing is I don't generally like buying bikes from dealers as they have to make their profit too obviously so you pay a bit of a premium.

I prefer the e3 its dosnt budge and gets in there good, but its really what you do good with, everyone is different

The XT30 was a fab bike when new! It was barely 10mph slower than a 600cc bike, and fairly useful off road too! They are fairly light at about 123kg, and have 31.5bhp. They were capable of 15.3sec 1/4m and MCN tested one at 94mph! Id definately buy one if i saw a really tidy well looked after example!

p.s. Always had a silly idea of wanting to put an XT350 lump into a TZR125L. I'm sure it would go in, and there is another 5-6bhp to be found in the XT without that much trouble IMO.

Well, the one I've seen isn't tidy but it should be cheap! From what I've read the main weakness is the valvetrain, apart from that it sounds like an ideal bike for me.

I'll second that quote on the XT350, I've got one and I rebuilt from a field bike, parts are cheap and plentifull on ebay and a lot of parts interchange with other models, goes well, light and easy to handle and sounds nice.

Well recomended and if yuo can twirl the spanners they're dirt cheap.
