Hey all, just a quick one.

Anyone had any problems at airports with random boxes of tablets etc?

My medical kit for travelling is slowly swelling with all kinds of useful things I've got off of friends, which I use judiciously. But I'm starting to worry that if I were to be stopped I might get some agro.

Just wondering what kind of stuff you will get agro for. I also carry needles and syringes (for Lignospan, and for removing spines/glass).

As I'm going to be returning from South Africa and I'm only buying one way from each side... I'm more likely to get a fumble from customs.

If you have an actual prescription then get a doctors letter stating what your on etc.

If not try and disguise as much as possible as something benign.

Im flying to Egypt on Sunday i plan to bake some special cookies with about a 1/4 in in, and we finish them off as we arrive at the airport, should kick in after security that way...

I would,nt worry you rarely get searched and when you do they have swabs that react when in contact with certain drugs or sampling machines, though in the ukraine l had a border guard use a much more simpler method by eating a pinch of my washing powder Rolling Eyes

Nope. And I travelled around the world for 9 months with a syringe, anti-biotics, ibruprofen etc. in my medical kit. Thumbs Up

Only once did I get caught out, and that was on a Cathay Pacific flight from Hong Kong, I had forgotten to pack my penknife into the rucksack, so they kindly labelled it up and put it into the hold for me and I was able to collect it at the other side. I am guessing a country like America it would have been confiscated!

For someone who comes across as a fairly competent and intelligent person I'm bemused as to why you posed this question.

If you were to be searched at customs, can easily happen, and they find syringes on you (unless you have the obvious medicine on you that you need to take with it) then expect in a long wait in cutoms at the very least.

Do you really /need/ to carry a syringe with you?

Stupid question to a stupid situation that can easily be avoided.

Would you trust a South African with a unknown syringe in one of the most AIDS infected countrys in the world, much safer providing your own needles and syringes in africa.

I'd make sure any prescription drugs are in either the original packet or a pill bottle with a label on giving your name and address, the name and address of the pharmacy that prescribed them, the dose rate to give them at and and the statuatory wording "KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN".

Very common to carry a medical kit with syringes, sutures, needles, IV catheters and fluid giving sets to third world countries. In fact, I'd recommend it and make sure if they are to be used, you watch them open the sterile pack in front of you.

Can't see it being a problem, they might prefer you to put your sharps in the hold though. May also look better if it's all in the form of a made-up "kit" rather than a collection of loose syringes and pill bottles rattling round in your pockets.

Was a woman not threatened with prison in some middle east country because she had codeine or some other opiate based drug on her person?

You're best bet is the foreign office website, it will probably have advice on this kind of thing...

Its probably OK, just don't go to the UAE, and make sure all of the drugs are prescribed to you.

None of them are prescribed to me Neutral

Carry syringes to inject the lignospan if need be (for suturing), and as mentioned for sterile things to pry out barbs (very useful in Greece with Sea Urchins everywhere).

I have an IV bag of saline, but I can't find any of the IV packs that connect to it Sad

Definitely agreed though, when going to shit holes it is very handy to have everything you want. You'd be suprised how hard getting stuff like immodium or strepsils can be. Yet they'll give out antibiotics like candy.

It's called a "giving set".
https://www.google.co.uk/products?q=%22giving+set%22&hl=en

You can use a blood one for giving solutions, but not a solution one for giving blood (the blood ones have an extra filter to prevent clots passing through).

Ah see, my only previous experience is with animals. And on them it's just subcutaneous.

Thinking

Also having trouble finding somewhere 'cheap' that will supply to the public Sad Plus most of them do not seem to contain the butterfly needle in the same pack Thinking

Why is it so hard to get simple medical supplies Rolling Eyes Damn monopoly.

I just want a tube, with a spike at one end, a needle at the other and a drip chamber... Wrapped in a sterile bag. Could just use a peg for the flow so not even too worried about that.

Immigration over here won't be too bothered, and as they run customs now you should be ok.

One way ticket is irrelevant to returning to the UK, as a Brit you have the right of entry, you only have to establish your identity at passport control, not account for your movements. The exception to this is SB officers having a little sniff around, but 99% of the time that's for flights/people travelling from suspect Middle Eastern areas. SB won't care about meds, prescription or otherwise.

ZAF flights aren't really classed as hugely high risk by Customs, so you aren't likely to get tugged for a random search anyway.

Can't comment on issues overseas, I'm sure there's plenty of peeps with actual experience.

It's usually easy to see, that's why. Sometimes in the one in the crook of your elbow where they take blood from but it tends to obstruct the catheter if you bend your arm.

Army medics sometimes use the jugular, difficult to miss and usually still accessable in cases of extreme blood loss.

You should see me hit the cephalic vein in a dehydrated 8 week old kitten with a 23g catheter. Or a rabbits marginal ear vein using a scalp vein butterfly catheter. Wink

I thought if you brought a one way ticket it made them more suspicious that you were drug smuggling.

I don't want to get in one of those stupid situations where they rip everything apart looking for a few kilos of the devils dandruff, then save face by kicking off about some codeine.

But it seems like I won't get /too/ much agro though, so I think I will just keep it in there.

It's only crossing borders that ever worry me.

Immigration won't know, cos they ain't entitled to ask. Cast your mind back to the last time you handed your passport over at the border - they usually ask what flight you're off, but that's more to find out how busy they are going to be - and to kill the 20 secs it takes for your passport to swipe - than an interrogation.

Only non-EU citizens have to justify/explain/reveal their journey. EU citizens have the RIGHT to cross borders for whatever reason in all but a very few limited circumstances.

Ah, but surely they don't solely rely on tip-offs to catch smugglers?

The remaining 1% is if you did something with one of their girlfriends. I now try to avoid travelling through Gatwick.

Mainly have a blatant disregard for the 'elf and safety.

Most of what I do is field work, in dodgy countries with shit hospitals. South Africa is notorious for getting mugged while sitting in A+E waiting room for instance.

And you have to pay.

So yes, I'd rather take the odds and sods that on balance I'm likely to need. Such as suture kits, stuff to clean with etc.

Last time I drop kicked a nail in Greece I just cleaned it and superglued it. Worked like a charm Thumbs Up
