Work issues

Well to sum it up i'm quite peeved, i've been in this job for 2 months and got called unreliable yesterday. Now i applied for this job and instead of having set hours i was given the bank work option (work when needed if you can) because I'm at Uni Mondays half day and Tuesdays full days.

Now things have been fine apart from, they moaned because i had to go to Uni on Tuesday this week, now i rang them up at 10 Pm on monday to remind them and that i wasn't available tuesdays this week and also at 0600 am the following morning.

I get a phone call basically calling me unreliable and if i'm going to Uni don't bother.

Now i'm under a contract that states i have no obligation to accept work and the same that they aren't obliged to be offered it.

Now i did 48 hours for them last week, to cover the people who keep ringing in sick, i got the rota and said I'll cover these for you and then worked an extra for them id done a 0800 till 2000 and then covered from 2000 till 0100 because someone didn't turn up.

Now i get this, that i'm unreliable, so how do i go about sorting this? can i get sacked because i said i couldn't do a shift this week because i have uni.

Also the only way i can seen them moaning is when i was rushed into A&E about 3.5 weeks ago suffering from severe pain in my left kidney, i got my Mum to ring them 4 hours before the start of my shift and i rang them once i got admitted to the ward.

Sounds like you spoke to your boss on a bad day! If he/she says it again you should politely inform them that you covered so many hours last week to help them- plus the idea of bank work is to actually be flexible with the hours you are worked and you are entitled to say no to a shift- particulalry as I am sure they have always been aware of your uni commitments.

I find that although money is obviously very useful, uni is actually more important at the moment. So dont take too much crap from them!

Exactly, at my interview they new i was at Uni, which was clearly pointed out to them, hence offering me the bank contract instead of full or part time hours. Hoping to go in and speak to her today. And if i do get booted out then i'll take it up further with the big bosses of Southern Cross Health care.

Nurse bank and agencies are always like this.

Tell them that you can work on certain days and they'll still ring and ask if you can work others. If you decline they get a little shirty. Heavon forbid you decline the ward allocated to you...its your choice to work above and beyond studies, you are helping them out in you spare time.

Remember that the Uni may not be so pleased that you may be working so many hours and especially if doing shifts on 'self directed study days'.

I would say it gets better when you qualify but...

In short, it was like being the 80's that's not just the job but the way of life too.

Back in the UK and currently unemployed and waiting for short listing to be completed. Got an 'interview' for bank tomorrow actually so should bring home a few £ here and there so I'll be in the same situation as you with the random calls and late minute shifts.

Damn slow progress!

Not saying your crap at your job, but the 2 bank nurses that i had 'care' for me were absolutley useless. Must of took them about 1 hour to give me a bed bath, they were talking about vespas for ages, i wouldn't mind if they were talking about proper bikes

Ahhhh if its like the 80's then i'll give it a miss, the 80's music was crap

And some bank or even permanent staff have crap caring skills and shouldn't be doing the job. I have been shown the way to do things properly by my Mum who used to be a Nurse and now teaches Nursing at Uni.

I enjoy the job, you get the shit times, but also the good times are great.

Hope this doesn't sound patronising, but welcome to life.

I used to go out of my way to get a good report for my job, secondary duties, be there to cover for the roster when others call in sick, help out by staying behind with extra work, always turn up early, volunteer for shit, but after a year in this post, I've learnt the good stuff is never noted, only the bad. I've given up pleasing people, and now only go out of my way to upset others. It's much more enjoyable this way. Having said that, they can't exactly fire me

Hope it does get better though.
