Shouldn't think it'd harm it.
Ask in workshop to be sure.

Magnatec made my clutch slip on my Bandit 600.

dont do it ,especially since good bike oil wont be any dearer.Motorcycle engines generally use the oil for heat transfer far more than a car , some watercooled race bikes put a big oil cooler in the feed line. The clutch slip stuff is typical.Motorcyle engine designs for smaller bikes use the oil for the gearbox as well and don't develope enough power to notice the slipping. On larger engines it's usual to find seperate gbox oil .Is a bandit an air/oil cooled bike with skinny cooling fins? if so then the oil is critical if it's got no kettle plumbing on board.

The suggested reason for clutch slip is the friction-inhibitors they put in fancy car oils like Magnatec.
It seemed to do my ZX6 clutch in.

Pretty much all 4 stroke motorcycle engines I know of bar Harleys and a few other odd-ball corner cases only have a single lot of oil for gearbox and engine.

So you've got a lovely near classic sporting thoroughbred lurcher and just to save the price of twenty ciggies your gonna turn it into a burglars dog,('Surprised')

dont do it .('Shocked')

I use slick 50 for the first few thousand miles on rebuilt small honda singles with no problems .I tried it in an old Suzy sp370 after rebuilding the engine and it slipped the clutchplates so I just ran it stationary with a clothes peg in the throttle for three half hour sessions at half revs to bed everything in ,then drained it and put clean oil only back in.

When i've stripped abused engines run on Kwiksave 3.99 crappo oil type shit by skinflint owners (i.e. mostley my mates) I ALWAYS find the inner cases ,especially crankcases are covered in a thick coating of near solid oil laquer. This crap cannot be rubbed off with a tough rag or nylon scourer ,it needs a petrol or parrafin brush and soak to shift it

please don't do it.

It's hardly cheap oil - not expensive by more specialist car oil standards, but still far from cheap.

if i was to list every model there would be hundreds and hundreds of bikes that have seperate gearboxes

but when he was talking about "larger engines" i think he was re-ferring to car and truck engines, not bike ones

Apologises for misimformation ...

I should'nt do post while shouting at me kids

Hmmmnz right

never use crap or the wrong oil. the bike needs the right oil

IT IS OIL COOLED ,thats why it has the bigger rad ,it's more oil cooled than most ,hence the ornamental cooling fins.

been using castrol gtx for about 3k in my air/oil cooled 1990 XJ600, and apart from the hole in my collector getting bigger, its the same as the day i got it Very Happy ran castrol gtx in my 96 KH125 2 stroke for 2 years with no problems either, My dads bandit has over 100k on it, he also uses castrol GTX in it, and recommended me it.

Edit: I would NOT put magnatec in it though, for fear of friction reducers in it.

Hi

Used car oil in bikes loads of times, but not GTX (which does have a reputation for causing clutch slip).

Suzuki just specify to use SF or SG 10W40 oil, nothing about motorcycle specific oil. SF and SG specs are basically obsolete car oil specs (likely the only car oils you will still find down to those specs are cheapo oils).

All the best

Keith

Not sure about the UK, but in the US Castrol GTX says right on the bottle specifically NOT to use in bikes..

Castrol GTX HIGH MILEAGE is fine in bikes, as in its extended gumpf it states it is suitable for wet clutches.

Ive used it in a few bikes including my FJ1200 and those have notoriously iffy clutches.

read the specs on the can, as long as the viscosity is right the higher the numbers the better the oil

You need oil that is of SF, or SG grade, as Kickstart states. avoid SJ oil like the plague as it contains additives that bugger up wet clutches.

SOME SL grade oils are ok, usually the cheaper ones, as the friction modifiers specified in SJ were removed from SL spec.
