Can anybody tell me what the key positions are on an MZ 251 ETZ?

The last owner of mine has lathered black paint all over it,including all round where the ignition key goes in and all the switchgear. I need to know what the key positions are, because i cant get the indicaters to work Mad

Also,What are those two square push in switches on the left hand switchgear for?

Hmm I had one.

I think the key goes in at about 4 o clock, and turns to 6 o clock to turn the ignition on.

The square buttons should be the high and low beam I think, but take a photo it might jog my memory.

Try firing up the engine, mine was designed to run the lights only with the engine running. But then mine had a special ignition system.

Surely you can tell the key position, because some lights come on....

Is your battery flatter than flat? Is your engine dead? Because surely you start the engine then press the big square button and see what it does!

Actually, one of the buttons might be the horn.

My battery was flatter than flat. Confused
I've charged the battery now and i can work out all the positions from there. One of the square buttons is the horn, the other may be a pass light.
Do you know which position is reserve and which is on on the fuel tap? I'm assuming that off is pointing back.

Yeah, off is back, on is down, reserve is forwards.

Google Burwins of MZ-spares.co.uk he's great for any spare parts you need.

I bought my tarty ignition system from MZ-b.de although that was expensive and fairly crap on a road bike.

You can also buy a fair few new parts on ebay.de
The german for exhaust is auspuff, and carb is vergaser. I believe. With air filter being luft filter.

All the same bike, my 1990 MZ ETZ 251, they're good bikes!

Wotcha.

<<goes and looks at ETZ>>

Yep - "short" button is the horn. "long" button is the pass light.
You are correct with the fuel tap. Back is off - down is on - forward is reserve.

From memory...

Starting from the key pushed fully anti-clockwise and moving round in a clockwise rotation....

1. Not Assigned
2. Parking Lights - no ignition
3. Off
4. Ignition and daytime ancilliaries (indies, horn, brakelight)
5. As above with tail light and pilot light
6. As above with headlight proper on

Hope this helps and get hold of me for other MZ stuff, mines in storage right now but I know the bike well.

Took her for an MOT today.
It took me ages to start her, mainly because the batery was flat(because i left the park lights on for about two hours on sunday Embarassed ). After nearly breaking all my toes when i hit the footrest on the downward stroke i hooked a battery charger up to the battery and kicked it over, she started staight away Cool .
One problem i have got is a bit of a flat spot at about a ton........
Wink Maybe i'll change the powerband Very Happy
Oh yeah and she passed, so i'm taking her to work tommorow. Strangely i'm looking forward to it.

Took her to work this morning, she ran like a dream until i got within 50 yards of work. The she just cut out on me so i pulled the clutch in and coasted into the yard.
After enduring all the mickey taking Embarassed i tried to start her with no success. So she got left until after work...
I've got petrol getting through and a spark at the points but absolutely no spark at the plug, even when i put a screwdriver in the plug cap i didn't get a shock.
So it's either the lead or the coil.
Any ideas anyone?

Is it a points one? Im not sure if any of the 251s were points, but if so your points may have closed up....

Set the points gap to 12 thou and the ignition to fire 2.5-3mm BTDC

Thats the ignition setting.

presuming uve checked the HT cap and lead for breaks corrosion etc....

earth the plug against the frame/bare metal and put a direct line from the coil positive to the battery positive and negative to battery negative. When u disconnect the negative the coil should spark.

If it doesnt theres your problem!

I have fixed her Cool
It was a loose fuse, one of the LT wires on the coil was connected to it.
Thanks for all your help.
MZs are fun. Even if "proper" bikers don't nod anymore. Shocked

How on earth did you get a female on the back of an MZ? Shocked
Bloody thing conked out this morning on the way to work Sad
It blew the main fuse, probably because i didn't have the lights on or maybe it was just vibration.
I managed to bodge it on the roadside and i was going again after a couple of minutes.
Are the fuse boxes a known problem on MZs?

?

Well when they need a lift. Oddly after the first spin they wanted lifts all the time Wink

The vibration at 60mph in fourth gear on a 301 is apparently pleasant.

My relationship with this bike is turning a bit sour....
Bloody thing threw me off braking for a junction on the A11 this morning in the pouring rain.
Sliding along a dual carriageway in the rain with an arctic behind you is bloody scary.
After someone helped me up my knee gave way and i fell over like a sack of spuds. I got a lift to casualty, had a couple of X rays on me knee but they don't know what's wrong with me. So i was given a pair of crutches and sent home Shocked no pain relief,"just come back in 10 days. Now i'm sitting at home feeling battered and not particularly happy. I cant afford to sit at home so i need to mend quickly.
On a lighter note, apart from a bent footrest and a couple more marks the MZ is fine. Laughing
