Well not a kid really, my lad at the age of 24 has finally packed up his xbox and moved into his first "own" home with his girlfriend.

I'm pleased and excited for them, but at the same time a little bit sad cos it's kind of the end of an era.

Sat here surveying the wreckage of his room that he has left for me to sort out, and just feel a bit meh. Confused

I know most of you will be coming at this from the other end so come on, cheer me up a bit, tell me how you felt when you left home properly for the first time?

When I moved in with my girlfriend, my older brother (of about 23) also moved... straight into my bedroom as it was bigger. Dossing cunt.

Probably true when Robby says he will be back. I left abnd came back twice to my parents,. though not welcome. It happens. But I can imagine its sad. After 24 years its a change. I can only imagine how it feels so I cant even offer any supportive words. Crying or Very sad

We were talking about this at work the other day and both me and my colleague can't believe kids are still at home at the age of 24/25+ but apparently the average age for men to leave home is 24! Shocked

For me, I love my parents very much but couldn't wait to get my own place! I moved out of home when I was 18 and never moved back in!

I personally think it's really unhealthy for kids to stay living at home that long, I realise there can be real financial implications with staying at home and it means you can save a lot of money... but I think the main reason is laziness... the longer you stay at home, the lazier you are!!!!

Anyway, it's interesting to see it's come up here too! Would be interested to hear why you left home or way you stayed at home and what age that was!

Thumbs Up

If I ever have kids, I'll make it known that they're going to get kicked out at the age of 18 unless they're in an apprenticeship or at University. And even if at Uni, I'd pay for them to go to Halls ffs. Laughing

I'm not commenting. I still live at home and i'm eternally grateful for my parents letting me stay.

My circumstances are my own fault and would not have happened if I was forced to move out at 21. (At 18 I was on £1.81/h.)

So, now with making loads of bad financial moves over the last decade, (mainly carcraft) and living beyond my means, i'm nearing the end of this mess I got myself into.

I've sacrificed everything into sorting this out first. Even relationships and my future. I am not being lazy at all and I support the house economy as I should rightly do.

Next year I will be starting the process of preparing to move out. At the age of 30.

I moved out when I was 18, granted to uni but still I moved out at 18. I've come back both summers for about 3 months and odds are I'll be gone for good when I go back to uni. Obviously coming back for the odd weekend/christmas/whatever.

Feels kind of daunting actually, I love living on my own however.. I tend to feel really trapped when I'm staying with my parents. The thing I miss the most is the area and my friends from home when I'm away.. But that is life I guess.

Even if I hadn't of gone to uni I think I'd have moved out by now, assuming I had the job to support it.

I moved in with my father when I came back from travelling, for a short spell whilst I got myself established, job, work etc. in this area.

Whilst it was considered a bit weird at my age I was like the lodger. We had our separate living areas, and I bought my own food, did my own cooking, paid a nominal rent...I had not actually lived with him since I was 9 years old, so considered it a well overdue act of parental duties. Thumbs Up

Needless to say, I'm no longer there, and have my own digs. But I do still have a few items in his loft. Cool

Having lived since about age 8 with both parents and grandparents in the same house, I felt I had slightly more incentive to go than many others might, I buggered off asap at 17 albeit to the navy so not my own place per se, it was still better than living at home. Came home a lot of weekends, but not being resident there changed the dynamic completely.

I'd probably be welcome back if the shit hit the fan, but it would be the last on a long list of options, and the foreign legion would probably be higher on the list. Razz

If your parents house is a nice comfortable place to be and they leave you to get on with your own thing its no surprise people stick around. Much higher disposable income for toys etc would be a big reason for a lot i'd imagine.

Parents place is 50 miles away, its close enough to visit, but not so convenient that they would be tempted to pop round every weekend or vice versa. I like that set up.

Never ever want to fall into the Sunday lunch family routine of middle England. Of course, I may feel differently about that in years to come.

Think of the vastly reduced electric bill Jo Wink

Personally I couldn't move back to my parents, it would feel like a step back rather than a step forward although I do find it a tad annoying that I had more money to throw about when I was at university working 1 day a week than I do now working a full 40 hour one Confused

If he isn't back within a year i'd say you are pretty safe in that he will not be returning.

Living with rents = celibacy unless they're on holiday, or you can blag going back to theres.

Can't see how people do it for so long.

Depends how modern/realistic your parents are.

Even if they uinderstood that bringing home random tarts is part of the friday/saturday ritual, they would still a) expect them to rob the house and b) complain about the noise (alot).

Then I'd have to say it was revenge, then they'd get embaressed and upset, and then I'd be kicked out.

Bad cycle.

Moved out at 17. Had a mortgage at 20. Never looked back.

I find it bizarre many of my friends that are in their 30's are still with parents, still in 'uneducation' still not really got any direction or responsibilities in life.

Laughing I tormented my parents with my horribly noisy bed. Squeaky mattress, loose headboard, no way of making it quiet.
As for noisy women, beds have pillows. Do the math. I once held a pillow over my girlfriends face whilst grinding when we first started going out. My parents weren't even home that time, I just done it for the lulz. She never questioned me about it. Laughing

I moved out my parents back in March, I was 20 then, 21 now and it was the best thing I'd done. I was already pretty independent although as bonny said, there are clauses and you can't have fun no matter how understanding they may be.

Now I come, go and bring back who I please when I want and I really, cannot complain. Cool

They are still 2 miles away, I have as much contact as I want(or dont) but they live their life and I live mine.

My place is council so it's cheap but you never take into account all the extra expenses.. Jo, I'd say if he hasn't moved back or hinted at it within 2/3 months then you're probs safe he's happy with the choice. A lot would depend on his girl but big enough boys don't have many issue's. Wink

I think most of my mates are still with their parents, there's only literally 1 or 2 that are out 'on their own', but that's because circumstances forced it, me and my best mate wanted to get out in the world with out free will, he lives alone 15 miles away in a private rented house and his dad moved to Norwich.

Point is, if he's taken the step himself as I did, he's ready for the worlds challenges and all you can do is support him.

Back when I was younger, I went through all that phase. And with girlfriends, yeh, you can get creative. Believe me on that one.

However, random tarts you pull... I'm not a big fan of the trying to hump in a back alley on the walk home. Plus 'come back to mine for a drink' is a nice subtle euphemism. Can build from there. 'Fancy a fuck in a park' is a bit harder to pitch Wink

Bare in mind I had 3 years at uni, where ad hoc parties and trysts were a nightly occurance in my flat. I lived with the girlfriend the last two years (in the same kitchen block thing) so I couldn't bring people back. But all the women there had their own places too, so it all worked out.

Here... everyone lives with their rents. I'm currently 'courting' one girl. She lives with rents in Essex. I live with rents in Stevenage. So asides from waiting until one of them goes on holiday, we're stuck in the stalemate. I've jokily suggested hotels, but as we've only met up again the once it seems really un-gallant.
If I had my mown place, I'd of already been hitting her like a ginger stepchild.

THAT was my point.
