My bike is coming up to the 8,000 mile mark, ive had it since january 08, so its been more than 12 months, meaning time for an oil change, my haynes manual says i should also change the oil filter, is this right? do i change the oil filter everytime i change the oil? What do other hornet users do?
cheers.

Yep, oil change should always come with a new filter. You don't normally need a new O-ring with the filter, just dap your finger in oil and rub it around the existing ring. Laughing

But yea.. make sure you oil the filter aswell before you install it. Easy as.

couple of hints for you -
1- get the oil filter removal tool from wherever you get the filter. It's not that expensive and you'll love it when you don't have to stuff a screwdriver through your filter.
2- warm the bike up before you do it
3- wear suitable gloves, hot oil is hot. Thumbs Up

You always replace the O ring especially as ALL MM9 type filters whether they are Pattern or OEM come as standard with one what with it being part of the filter.

Honda tip.

To buy the filter tool with the filter actually works out a little bit cheaper than buying just the filter on its own. Don't ask me how but it does. Laughing

It's a couple of quid less when you buy the tool as well.

O, and the oil doesn't have to be "hot" even when it's warm I've found it still drains well. It's just the header you have to watch burning yourself on.

Don't think there's a lot in it either way to be honest. I have a thing about OEM filters, I trust them in a way I don't trust pattern parts.

K&N oil filters have a 14mm hex head on them so you can just use a spanner.

I was going to buy another honda oil filter from dobles, are there any other filters people would strongly recommend? As the mention of OEM and K&N made me think what the difference between them ad honda ones would be?
cheers.

I think there is little difference in cost so would stick with the OEM oil filter.I think mine was about £8 for Honda and about £6 for a pattern one.

Main advantage with the K&N is that it comes with a hole through the end of it so it makes lockwiring easier on race bikes. Laughing

Got the oil filter and tool. Was going to change the oil when my dad saw that i had only bought a 1L bottle of oil. I hadnt even realised, it was just out of habit from using an nsr to buy the small 1L bottles, not used to the big hornet. Luckily i didnt empty the oil, i need to go out and buy a 3L or 4L bottle, what ever they sell them in.

4 litres usually.

I think the hornet takes 3800ml with a filter change.

Oil filter + tool to remove + crush washer for the drain bolt is less than £12 all in from my local Honda Main dealer

Oil filter comes with the rubber seal on it.
IMO not worth the hassle of not using Honda stuff when they are so cheap

I checked the level the today, and its above the top line on the dipstick. Does this matter? I know your not meant to overfill but its not that much more, it stops where the dipstick becomes rounded.
