It suddenly just dawned on me that long hair on men is the fucking best thing in the world.

Only thing that concerns me is fighting, but I do very little of that. So... how long do I have to wait to go from grade 3 to shoulder length a la Antonio Banderas Cool

How do I prevent it from looking like lego-man during growing? Should I just let it grow and grow, or will I need to have little trims here and there... if so, what styles should one adopt?

I used to have long curtains to the bottom of my ears, I then got an undershave and had a high pony tail hahahahahaha

What a cunt!

Worse than that was the perm that followed, it was a Harrow thing Very Happy

You what?

Long hair is not good, you have to deal with it ffs.

I like no maintenance hair - #2 all over, every three weeks or so for a cut, which takes 5minutes.

You must have loads of time on your hands Mr. Shand!

Just let it grow to the length but until then wear a hat. I had shoulder length hair until the beginning of this year, i have a skinhead now.

I'm growing mine. Based on current performance, I estimate that it will take a year from grade one to reach chin level. Probably 18 months to shoulders.

Those kind of numbers I can live with Thumbs Up

Hurrah, the growing shall begin today as will, it seems, does the mid-life crisis.

you shall probably want to get it trimmed every now and then just to get rid of split ends and to entice the hair to grow quicker.

18 months is optimistic if your growing your hair from nothing.

I've had long hair for five years now and it's a bloody ballache! Yes its looks retro, awesome and the women do love playing with it but you have to wash it everyday, its always in your face and gets messy easily!

For a decent mame (I shall upload pictures later of my MEGA long hair that got trimmed down last year), it takes 2 years easily, if your growing from nothing. I currently have it to my shoulders but I suggest if your growing it you have it shorter.

One thing you have to take into consideration is if you can stand people glacing at you and saying "hello ladies" if your out with the wife or girlfriend.

Also long hair and bike helmets aren't a good mix.

*edit* People at work also call me James May because he seems to be the ONLY man in the world with long hair. After hearing that comment for the 20th time in a day, I feel like choking them to death with my hair.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

You will attract entirely the wrong sort of adjectives:

Foppish, effeminate, metrosexual, dandified, vain, hirsuite and queer. To name but a few.

I'd like a ponytail again, but only if I can avoid the bogbrush transitional period.

Agreed.

I am 20, and you WOULD think people would put my hair down to being young and stupid. Alas, i've lost track of the ammount of times drunken men have shouted abuse at me because of my hair.

However its a vicious cycle. Once you have long hair it's hard to let go. I had mine chopped to my ears once. I nearly cried and spent the next 12 months growing it back.

I had long hair in college. Took a bit over a year to grow out, that was with the occasional trim as well.

I kept it for about a year then cut it all off because it was a pain. I have a grade 2 all over now, so much easier.

Can't be bothered with all this gelling/styling stuff.

My hair didn't look very good long anyway, it went all wavy and curly at the ends.

Been growing for 3 1/2 years or so now, much be 4 now actually I lost track.

I grew from skin head essentially, took about 18 months until I could consider myself a long hair.

The first year is a pain in the ass, theres not alot you can do with it and it gets in your eyes alot.
It took me about 2 1/2 years to get to shoulder length, Im at just below my shoulder blades now and I doubt it will get much longer sadly. (Allways wanted hair down to my lower back, dunno why).

I would avoid trims for the first year or two, let it grow.
In the 3 1/2 years - 4 years ive been growing I`ve NEVER been to a hair dressers to be trimmed.
Simply because they cut far too much off.
I tend to S&D split ends/damage myself, therapeutic and keeps my hair in good condition at the ends, takes up alot of time though.

As for washing I do mine about once ever 2 weeks with shampoo, otherwise water.
I HATE the way shampoo/conditioner makes my hair go thin and horridly stringy, hence I avoid it unless my hair is dirty from work/airsoft/whatever.

Your own scalp oils are best for your hair, hence cleaning with water only.
For conditioning I use Almond or Jojoba oil overnight.

I love my long hair and cant see going without it (although, judging by my family I will go bald eventually Sad ), sure its a pain in the ass and you get lots of ridiculous comments from other blokes but fuck it.
It looks awesome and the ladies love it.
Rock on.

Dreads.

Didn't wash my hair for two and a half year maybe.

People said didn't smell nasty or 'owt (apparently your body releases 'cleaning' style stuff if you don't wash your hair for a while.)

#0 for me for ever on now Sad.

Nothing worse than finding yourself next to some arse with pungently smelling hair... It really is a uniquely disgusting smell...

That said and I'm not positive on the mechanics of this (i.e. how you'd style it or whatever...) But bryll cream makes hair grow alot more quickly. Don't know how or why, it just does.

Seems to be quite trendy to have longer hair these days... There is a danger you will end up looking like a bisexual clothes horse though, a la Richard Hammond.

Thumbs Up

My pulling powers were down to 5% of their full powers. I got teased by friends. It was harder to maintain. Long hair on men isn't something to be tackled lightly. Some of us just can't carry it off, and need to shave it to a neat zero. I know enough women who enjoy rubbing a shaved head, and then rubbing a purple head.

(that photo is about 5 years old, but it still makes me laugh.)
