Rigght, when i bought the Z about 2000 miles ago, the rear tyre was healthy, about 3-4mm tread on it.. I noticed after my first ride on it that even at slow speed and normal acceleration, the tyre was shredding, like rolled bits of rubber, and when i brushed my hand accross it, it came off. This continued and now the tyre is showing the wire. The tyres are pirelli diablo corsa's and i havent fiddled with my suspension, which is actually what i suspect it to be as it's rock hard?

Any other suggestions/input?

Thanks

Sounds like you need a new tyre.... That amount of depth/milage done, is about the right wear rate...

Perhaps you need to set the suspension a bit softer to suit you.... But that will not make the tyre last longer....

Perhaps you need to take more care, and replace the tyre when its to the wear markers and not passed them....

Diablo corsas are soft sticky tyres, probably overkill for the Z1000 unless you throw it around a lot. I would look at Pilot Road 2CTs as an alternative, I have them on my Fazer and my mate has a set on his Z1000 and we both rate them very highly. Sticky wnough for knee down and I've got 8k out of mine (they are ready for the bin now though).

Cheers

The supercorsas are soft and sticky, the corsa's should be able to stand lots of normal use. I have a set on my SP1 which have done over 3000 miles including touring Europe and the Ring and still are barely worn treadwise. They are slightly squaring off but nowhere near cords showing.

I disagree, incorrectly set up suspension can have quite an effect on tyre wear.
Having said that, I agree with all the rest of your post Wink 2500 miles from a Diablo Corsa is probably about right anyway, and if the wire is showing it's well past overdue for change!

Ok, i've never had diablo corsa's before, probably why i'm a bit shocked haha. Obviously i'm replacing them in the very near future, had an offer for some 2CT's and MEZ4's from members on here. It's not so much the life of the tyre that bothered me, it's the way they were wearing...

Is the pressure ok? If its not enough it will be overheating.

its just that supercorsas are stupidly soft. my R6 came with them when i bought it, with about 2-3mm of tread. went to birmingham and back and commuted for a week (about 1000 miles in total), they were down to the fibres.

I'm surprised that no one has suggested the tyres aren't balanced correctly or more likely the wheels are misaligned. Confused

Matt, he's on about Diablo Corsa's, very different to Supercorsa's.
Thumbs Up

Very different but still pretty soft compared to standard Diablos, which are more than enough for most road users. I've done trackdays on Diablos on a Blade and, despite shredding them to hell, they never even moved, even under my heavy hande throttle abuse.

I would usually get 5-6k out of a set of Diablos with the front and rear wearing out at the same time, my mate runs Diablo corsas on his GSXR600 and he's lucky to see 4k out of a set, despite the relative lack of torque.

Cheers

We get customers in at work who only get 2000 miles out of a rear Diablo Corsa/BT016 etc etc, so on a 'big' bike with hard use they dont last long at all.

Seriously? 2000 miles? i did that in a week on my SP1, another 1000 miles besides and my tyre has loads of life left. It wasnt exactly easy going 3000 miles either!

No neither could i, the prices are ridiculous this year....maybe the old twin isnt as hard on tyres as you might think!

Shocked 2 Months ago!! Should be done weekly at least, doesn't take much to make a difference after 2 months they could be way down.

Tyre prices are stupid at the moment. Pirelli and Metzeler went up 3% at the begining of July, and Pirelli and Michelin are going up 3% from the 1st of August.
Exactly what people dont need....
We have decided to close our tyre fitting centre, there just isnt enough money in tyres to be profitable, unless you are big name like round and black.

I got quoted £280 for a set of Michelin Pilot Powers, £260 for Corsa III's

Ended up going to FWR in Kennington (again) and got a set of Corsa III's for £226 all in....highly recommend FWR as always!

Sounds about right to me too Thumbs Up

I bought my Z1000 new, came with BT020s. After 3000miles I could see the wire (last 5-600 were round the highlands, and the roads up there are a bit more abraisive).

Tried various tyres but the only one that ever got significantly more mileage was a Tomahawk remould rear. I got about 6.5k miles out of that before it was ready for the bin.

Should be getting a lot more than 3000 miles out of an 020 esp on something like a Z1000!! I would expect nearer 5/6000 from them

I had 015's on a Gixxer Thou, the rear lasted over 2500 miles even with a blast across France.

I would say for the OP the lack of checking tyre pressures was probably your downfall...the tyre would have been running very hot very quickly and moving about a lot as well. This would have caused it to wear at a higher than normal rate.

It really is surprising how quickly tyres can lose a few psi too, after 2 weeks standing still my SP1 was down 6psi front and rear. Makes for interesting handling!!
